There is a benefit to having clientside filtering: there'd be no reason to avoid it. If people are allowed to speak how they want, and people also allowed to block out language they're not comfortable with, then everyone wins. Hell, it wouldn't even need to be complicated because no one would need to avoid it so you'd only have to filter out the actual words.
I would like to see one that had levels of filtering, minor, moderate, extreme... for different levels of vulgarity. I agree, scripted would be better than built in.
