Realistically, and that's the key word - because these are graphics for a game which is cartoony by nature. Just take advantage of it and be excessive in some spots, like mine - I used excessive dark spots to create atmosphere.

Also, you didn't have any true blacks (#000000 in hex) or true whites (#FFFFFF). This is your original modified so that the blacks are true black and your whites true white. You'll notice a huge "visual" improvement over the original.
