Umm... Any server in any type happens to be a mimicry. It's just that Era is the only one that is really modern, so when someone does it in that time-line, it strikes out a lot more. As for it usually failing, that could be easily based on how the developer community casts judgement on these servers: We just laugh at them, claiming they're copies, and don't put further thought into it.

Also... Modern is a good time to play things out... But it isn't usually very expanded in the minds of the public:

For instance, I'm currently playing World of Darkness with some friends of mine. It is based in current-Montreal... The thing is, it's based on the Vampire-Werewolf torque. I'd be interested in that genre of modern gameplay.
