Only bad firewalls let everything go outside with the default configuration. For example spybots. A good firewall would never let data send away from your computer but bad ones with allowing everything for output... the spybot sends all informations away.
That's if you intend to let spybots infect you in the first place. I'm quite safe if I go through a smoothwall box. If I need to, i'll set up two firewalls. First firewall only lets, say, http, mail and ftp incoming connections and blocks the rest. This would be directed to a web box (my ****ty linux box ). The second firewall would block all incoming and would contain my main computer(s).

I had ISA set up to block all outgoing once but It became extremely annoying to unblock stuff all the time.
