Graal 2 was a very different client to Graal 4, and it makes sense to use lighteffects for such basic components such as the font rendering and such because the majority of computers can render it much faster without placing as much load on the CPU itself.
If you just disabled those capabilities, then things would just not work, as Stefan already said.
Besides, most of the time, you can improve graphics performance just by using the latest graphics drivers from the vendor of your graphics adapter.
