Back when I was working on Oasis... I had it so the players could press combos of ZXCV keys for "hand signs" that would perform spells. To cast you'd tap the spacebar and then input the hand gesture combo and tap spacebar again to cast. I think my hand gestures were like... "palm out","point","fist", and "wiggle fingers" or something... So you could do a fireball like:

spacebar V Z spacebar

which translates to

start spell, wiggle fingers, palm out, cast

The character on screen would do an appropriate animation for the hand gestures... (well as good as you can do with stubs for hands)
