I've fallen in love with it too. The little hearts represent the charm level for that npc character. (how much they like you) You can have up to 4 red hearts or 4 black hearts displayed there. It took me a while to figure out what I was going to do about multiple pages... Arrows and page numbers seemed so boring so I mixed it up and decided to use little dots to represent the pages. It's been done before but I don't remember where I saw it.
I've considered having voices for when you talk to npcs. Not like voices saying all of the words, but you know... like how some games have the character say "hello!" or laugh, or make some sort of noise when you start talking to them.
It would be nice in theory but I'd need people to submit a bunch of voices in order to make it work.
