I think if you are in b-mode and you shoot another player in b-mode with a cannon from land or on a ship it should be instant death if you hit them close enough.

Cmon who has ever had a direct hit by a cannon and lived?
Maybe even a damage of crew on ships?
But of course the damage couldn't be that big otherwise ship battling would be too easy.
