different layers of tiles is most useful if the tiles on the higher layers can have transparency. Yet still, it can also be useful for layers of tiles that are square shaped.
I think it would probably be better to have a clientside drawing layer map for tiles. Like green for under players, blue for default layer, red for drawing over players, and white for drawing as a light?
Ex. The tree. You could color the draw layer map red for the treetop and green for the trunk and grassy area around it. You could make mailboxes blue and the grass around them green. The tops of door entrances you could draw blue, etc. |
