That is actually really nice, I know that when people played with the tiles they could make really nice looking houses. People often don't understand how to evaluate a set of tiles, though, so I can understand why someone would call it flat and ugly.

You could try adding some shadows extending to the right and also by making anything exposed to the upper left (including the entire roof) lighter in color, you can add depth to get rid of some of the Side Scroller view.
