That jailing seems kind of odd. What if someone harassed someone else, I don't think their jail time should be reduced through performing several meaningless tasks.

Look at the American legal system
anyway, it won't reduce it by too much, and jail times are made longer because of the option to decrease time for example, a 24 hour jail time is 24 hours of play, not a day, so they have to do a bit to get things like that off. The tasks are repetitive and boring, but it's better than standing still for that long
