A month?
here's an idea: if you can't fix the economy, add to it as it already is, and re-introduce age-old items that people haven't seen in forever.
If the account hasn't been used in say, three or four months (if there's no gold left on it) or five to six (for those with gold still on it) then slowly re-introduce the items (dont' remove it from the account, just make a copy of it to add back into the game) that way, in the unlikely case they -do- return, they won't find their items mysteriously removed from their inventory.
