That is great. I know I'll probably kick myself for mentioning this, but a prime example is the countryside in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. To the unwary eye, the countryside and Terra Roboda is just empty plains and forest, but if you pay attention, you can find MANY easter eggs and horseshoes -- not to mention some very scenic views for a game.
I'm just spitting out ideas, but one part could involve a small wagon circle that was heading westward but they broke down. Mission right there.
