If the only thing keeping you on a game is that you have a rare shield then you were bound to leave at some time or another for some other reason - and abandon your shield.

Even if I left the game, I still upgraded my account. I kept it there, just incase I was ever needed. But now, I don't have the shield anymore and I have no reason to stay.
