I think ZH may mean the topics. The first one was fun and challenging (well, the ICE one was). The Election one was too Americanized and for everyone in America who couldn't escape the election campaigns they were reminded of it here.
And now it's a Halloween/Christmas thing. Personally my view is Halloweens gone and Christmas is too similar to the ice thing. I think most did the ice one as you said it was something hardly ever done well or not easy, so it was a challenge and people wanted to prove them selves. That's if im reading ZHs mind correctly
