Stop it with the damn light effects

I went to a friends house, loaded Graal on his computer and saw the lighting effects.

TERRIBLE!

They're everywhere, and half of them don't even make sense.

You have a patch of grass that lets off green neon light,
the underground cave is pretty ugly itself with all those light effects.

Stop over using them, it looks like a newbies quake 2 map (I suggest you look at cranky steve on something awful).

I felt like jabbing my eyes out with a sharp object. :\

Note: They were made about a month ago. I'm better now.
Also note: I must be good, otherwise iSplash wouldn't have hired me for ToT.
And finally, note: I'm still better than you.

Thank you and pleasefallofftheworld. :)

Cloud_X 08-15-2001 07:15 PM

I used to use them but, It lagged me too much because graal doesnt have voodoo support they kinda hurt my eyes. (not making fun of them they were just so many and they were very bright)

yea i got voodoo3 3000 and it lags me so bad!

Fai 08-15-2001 09:30 PM

It should get darker at night. the night/day is pointless unless it makes sense.

ownerofbabylon 08-15-2001 09:32 PM

yea, all it is is a stupid time thing. it would be cool if it showed darker backpals as night progressed and maybe even birds went away and bats came out

ownerofbabylon 08-15-2001 09:34 PM

And even some kind of evil creatures came out during the night like wolves. And they stayed in the darkness. The cities like Bomboria were well lit but the wolves lurked outside in the shadows ^_^

Rekad 08-15-2001 11:16 PM

someone should make a flare spell that blinds everyone with good computers by making hundreds of lighting effects on one level and they would stay for like a minute, that would be cool.

ownerofbabylon 08-15-2001 11:24 PM

and it flashes so fast it makes us all seizure

Yeah, but when you use them in every other place on the level, it looks tacky and not pretty.
I guess you could think of it as cluttering the level with too much of the same thing.
Perhaps more light effect images need to be made other than light2.png. Perhaps we could have a few fog light effects around some of the mountainous areas of Graal that use light effects(to give the fog a transparent white fog look).
Then there's the possibility of transparent water. Just make an animated image which is able to use light effects, then make it blue and about 70% transparent. This would be a great idea for shallow water swimming, swimming pools, etc.

Loriel made a NPC as a joke that made you display over 1000 light effects, crashed graal for me. He thought it was hilarious.

HUZZAH

FatherDante 08-16-2001 12:38 AM

I already said this before. Light effects do indeed look professional, but using any NPC graphic over and over again, light effect or not, looks un-professional.

So, light effects should contribute to the ambience, not just make the level look like a christmas tree.

yes, but when Christmass comes along...they will need to look like a christmass tree =)
Someone better prepare for a big snow tile replacement or something to we can have christmass trees to decorate with lanterns(keep in mind in the old days of Graal we didn't have electricity and light bulbs).

FatherDante 08-16-2001 12:42 AM

Graphics team ought to make it. Put up christmas tree tiles and fill it with color effects... what a charming idea. :)

and you KNOW that Stefan will have to add ice to the coastal areas, freeze over the area around Jinn Island, expand a pond somewhere so we can have a frozen over lake to skate on, not to mension we have to have a big hill of some sort so we can go sled riding.
Then Santa(Stefan), will have to warpto through your playerhouse chiminy(sp?) and drop a present for the owner(not gralat, something special).

That was one of the good uses for the light effects.
Although some people plaster and paste them all over thier levels.

evilive 08-16-2001 05:03 AM

At least someone likes my lights :)

What would be really cool, would be if you could add lava pits, and at the bottom of the pits you could have molten rocks jumping out of them with red light effects =)

That my friend, I can do, now that I can script :) I scripted some moving lights and scrap and now I think I can do anything! BWHAHAHAHA lol Except for making large scripts....

I can make something that moves... and hopefully I can script some turties after I get better... But rightnow, I need Klye's help...Well, maybe I should wait until I get home because this computer doesn't have a good graphics editing program....

use the JF firesnake image, then adjust it to have 4 layers(for the light effect) around it. Maybe you could also resize it if you felt the need to.
