*.nw layers?

how do layers work on *.nw format levels? it seems like it doesn't do anything special, it just like, replaces the level rather than over lapping it. some one help, lol ;)

I think the *.nw levels are just meant for easier readability (Try opening one with notepad), plus someone somewhere else said that they have to be in that format to be able to work with the NPC Server.

The gservers and npcservers can read both file formats,
it is for easier reading and for being able to add
new stuff. The layers can be used to put stuff
temporary in the level file without replacing tiles
(this is not used yet but could be used by
level editors to support layering, like having a house
that can be moved without needing to change the
ground tiles)

so can NW files be used on free servers?
