Transparency
 

Pure white and pure black SHOULD NOT act as transparency. It's very annoying, and as far as I can tell, no one uses it as transparency.

It should at least not apply to PNGs.

I've brought this up multiple times, and that sort of compatibility is just not needed anymore.

I think magenta should be the transparent color. But you can use 32-bit PNGs you know.

There shouldn't be any transparent color. It's stupid to replicate functionality that PNGs already have.

32-bit PNGs work, but the file size will increase, even if you only use two colors or so.

For example, here's an image in 8-bit:

The 8-bit image is 347 bytes. The 32-bit one is 1,420 bytes. A 24-bit is 1,234 bytes (I won't bother posting that image).

I'm quite familiar with the difference between 32-bit and lesser bit PNGs, and the reason I want a new transparency color is so you can use smaller PNG formats and save disk space. There is no reason to be using a 32-bit PNG when your image has few enough colors than an 8-bit PNG would suffice and save disk space.

PNGs already support transparency (INCLUDING 8-bit ones), there's no reason to add a "transparency color".

I don't see much harm in using magenta. Anyone using that color in any situation other than for transparency purposes should be burned at the stake.
