IDEA: Downsize Graal

Bell, made a reply using this idea in a topic somewhere, why not make a post about it?

TOPIC:
Graal need's to downsize;i.e. servers.

Thoughts?

Loriel 04-18-2009 07:05 PM

I really wish you elaborated on this a bit. Do you mean you want to take away people's servers?

WaDaFack 04-18-2009 07:11 PM

No no.
Let me just explain what I mean,

There are too many servers for such a small population. The whole "Making your own server" is a great idea and should stay, but should there really be that many classic servers? For example, there are some useless servers such as Delteria and Atlantis who are beyond being finished development, why are they even there?
and so on...

No one even plays alantis or Delteria, so taking them off the classic list wouldnt affect anyone, which means their will be no changes in playercount on the other servers.

Delteria has a pretty awesome dev server

i wouldn't doubt it, but taking the server off of the classic list right now wouldn't change anything. Maybe once delteria dev comes current delteria and they get a playerbase things would be changed

kia345 04-18-2009 07:22 PM

Removing it and readding it would hardly change anything.

But if you take away people's favourite servers, they are not going to start playing on your server, they are just going to quit.

Loriel 04-18-2009 07:35 PM

The only way I can see out of the whole having too many playerworlds thing is to give developers something to do without making them do their own server. Which is going entirely against the making people buy playerworlds business model so good luck with that.

That takes away from the idea WaDaFack is suggesting. You basically mean remove Delteria for now, until it's done with the new project?

Leaving it online is hurting nobody, and offers a chance that here and there a player will log on and offer to apply for a development position. Advertising on these forums for when you need staff is not that helpful.

To be honest, i think 'downsizing' graal would be one of the most *****ic choices to be done yet. Can you list some positive and negatives? x.x

Development positions are the worst, just develop and stop being a jerk about it

WaDaFack 04-18-2009 08:50 PM

This is just a discussion, REMEMBER THAT!
If you dislike this idea, make a post why you hate it or why you like it. Just don't flame Bell, or myself.

You don't only need to state whether you like it or dislike it, maybe you can give your own idea's ETC.

Tell that to all the developers then. Not everyone sees it like that. :\

It is more of an issue with the entire culture around playerworld development. Mostly playerworld files are only on the actual Graal server, so you can only ever work on anything if you are already a "staff member" with "admin rights", which is just ridiculously stupid.

I think if the population is spread too think it's a problem of quality, not quantity.

You're right, but quantity is still a factor that affects the presentation of the game. I think that is what he is trying to get across.

I agree - but I think it's an initial problem, and not a long term one. If players discover a higher quality server they will as a mass play it more. When other players see the high playercount they'll log on, ignoring other worlds.

Vima 04-19-2009 12:21 AM

Downsize graal would be good, but it wont help improving the playercount.
It really depends on the servers.

I think we should wait and see untill AEON comes out. I hope it will bring new players and not to mention old players (who have stopped playing graal) to come back.

WaDaFack 04-19-2009 12:26 AM

Downsizing Graal isn't supposed to increase the population, but to have more players on a particular server. Tell me, is a game fun when the playercount is only 50?

Yes, some of my fondest memories of Graal are from 30-40 people on Delteria.

WaDaFack 04-19-2009 12:54 AM

"Memories"
That was than, and this is now. Now look at Delteria, struggling to reach a playercount of 2.
Re-think your answer, is a game fun when you have 50people? The only servers that are fun, would be Zone or GK. The rest, just dull and boring.

*Note GK was the best server I've ever played on Graal, it sucks that I don't want to pay another 60$*

Some people dont like the GK or Zone gameplay. I am one of them. I like the classic type gameplay.

You may want to give it a second chance - the community is larger now and it may be easier to get help with difficult problems.

I wouldn't call it 'struggling', because i can guarantee when they complete their project, it'll be a success.

And again, how is your 'Downsizing Graal' plan going to make significant change the over all playercount other than forcing players to play a few servers they may not like? I know a few people that for damn sure would not play Graal if the only options were like Zodiac,Era, GK, and Zone.

Ok you clearly weren't around in the older days. Even then when Classic had it's massive 250+ playercount and such, servers like Enigma, Sanstrata, Mithica, and Xone (all of which I called my home at some point) didn't typically have more than 50 people on, yet my best memories on Graal was from that time era. The community was different, servers were different, but don't say it isn't possible to have fun with 'only' 50 people.

Today Classic is actually a decent experience when it has 25-30 players on. The events only require about 10-12 to be fully enjoyed.

You people keep mentioning your memories. Your also referring yourself as everyone, maybe you like the events on Classic when there is only 10-12people, but does everyone else? Graal is supposed to be a MMORPG, not a 2-D shooting game(Zone and Era).
and I begin to wonder......

I directly answered your post and I'm not the only one who enjoyed servers that had smaller playercounts. Of course I don't like playing ghost town servers, but 50 is fine in my books.

WaDaFack 04-19-2009 02:16 AM

Crono, but take UN for example. It has a 50playercount, but than 3/4 of it is idling, doing nothing but making others think that the server is full of enjoyment.

What do you do than? Idle with the rest?
You come on Graal to play with other people, have fun, waste time or whatever. You don't come on a game to just leave it on and do something else. It's acceptable if you have to go "AFK" for a few minutes, but idling for hours is just ridiculous.
Yet, I have no idea how idling got into this reply but it's a good point!

Do i smell contradiction?

If they choose to idle, then that's there option. nothing can be changed about that. The problem here is deeper i think. I've been on every server, and there's always a large group that decides to idle, whether it be not often, or always.

Operation: Downsize Graal
Status: Failed before even considered.

They're not struggling to get any players, because right now they don't need players.

I have faith in what they have planned.

Yes, to me, the less the better. I'd rather 12 cool people than 80 idiots and 12 cool people
