Classic Card Game

As many of you know, Classic's card game was finally released today. After years of scripting, testing, developers leaving, and other unspeakable horrors, it has finally been made public.

The card house itself is located west of graal castle and just under gc studios. Warp to either to get their quickly. If you're new to the server, head west from the main city once you get there. Once inside, talk to Luda at the main desk to get your starter deck, card manual, and card album.

The easiest way to get an idea of how the card game works is to visit this website:

www.freewebs.com/classiccard

The basics of the game are explained, as well as some of the extra functions like deck editing.

Currently there are some issues with how long you have to wait until you're worth points again. The large wait is necessary to avoid people laming wins and getting loads of points. Is it too long of a wait? We'll review that over the first week or so.

Right now the card game is the major in-between events content. It shouldn't be too hard to find an opponent during active times of the day. Clearly your starter decks have really, really bad cards with lots of 1s. Once you pile up some wins and get some boosters, your decks will be much, much better. Trust me. I've tested this game for a few months now. As cool as the mou cow is, you'll have more fun pretty soon.

More cards (currently theres 100 or so) will be released in the future, as well as any tweaks that are necessary, so don't feel like everything is set it stone as it currently looks.

That should just about cover everything. If you have any questions, feel free to ask myself, DC, night, or mystic. Enjoy the card game. A lot of hard work (mainly DC's scripting and night's gfx work) so we hope you find it fun.

-Glad

Does everyone get the same starter deck?

I don't think so because I had 3 Taylor Richard cards and traded one to DC... unless he just wanted 4.

BlackSolider 04-13-2009 06:02 AM

Starter deck is apparently a random amount of lvl 0 cards. Those lucky enough to have multiple beers+npcs should win most of their early matches. Those unlucky enough to have been stuck with 3 conch shell cards probably want to take those out of their deck.

And I only got one taylor richard card, just for comparison.

Shadow87 04-13-2009 09:15 AM

Big city bandits 4teh win

EclipsedAngel 04-13-2009 11:44 AM

Player bust.

not necessarily. if you know how to work around them then you should be good to go.

btw, me and nighty had an epic match with his high level cards he got from the booster pack. i nearly beat him with the defensive build that my deck has

MysticX2X 04-13-2009 12:17 PM

As I have said before, having to win 10 card games ( gaining 10 card points) for a simple booster back most likely containing a lot of level 0's is a bit too much especially with the chance of losing and not being worth card points for a while.

Possible to change, maybe.

BlackSolider 04-13-2009 02:48 PM

The basic booster (10 pts) randomly gives out commons, which currently range from lvl 0 to lvl 2.

Night, that lucky sob, got a lvl 1 and two lvl 2 cards. I doubt lvl2s are going to stay common for very long, but we'll see.

For comparison, I got 5 lvl 0 cards. Yay.

Personally I would have liked to see better starter decks (a few lvl 1s or something) or at least everyone getting a free booster. These decks are so bad you basically have to break the most basic rule (don't expose your 1s) just to do damage.

Gah. Enough ranting.

Rufus 04-13-2009 03:00 PM

How many cards do you get out of Booster Packs?

BlackSolider 04-13-2009 03:04 PM

Five. At least the basic one.

I'll check on the others.

xnervNATx 04-13-2009 03:43 PM

every booster is 5 cards and yay my deck suck so bad

fragman85 04-13-2009 05:06 PM

I love it.

xXziroXx 04-13-2009 05:15 PM

After reading the rules, I've come to the conclusion that you ripped the card game from Final Fantasy 8 and made some personal tweaks. Not sure if I like the fact that the basics are (probably?) ripped, but the end result appears quite nice - good job.

The idea might be 'borrowed' but I can personally attest to the fact that making this card set see the light of day was the equivalent for Night as a man actually going through childbirth. I'm glad he finally got to see it happen.

Galdor 04-13-2009 05:27 PM

well I was sure that this was going to suck but it wasn't bad =D just wish the quests had same quality aswell >.>

BlackSolider 04-13-2009 05:44 PM

@ the idea of ripping the game

I've heard from several people that it is indeed very similar to the ff8 card game, although I have never played it (though I think I saw it once, and I skimmed a tutorial for it yesterday.) I wouldn't be surprised if many concepts weren't "borrowed", but do remember that graal itself is largely ripped off other games. And really, what isn't ripped off these days? I don't recall who said this, but they famously said something like "good artists paint, but great artists steal."

MysticX2X 04-13-2009 05:51 PM

I wonder what happens when everyone gets above you with some level 1's or 2's and you're left with a crap level 0 deck.

Either way, it is still fun and I've enjoyed testing/playing it.

Didn't you script a final fantasy like battle system for your server? What a rip!

"derived" seems more friendlier than ripped.
Triple Triad Advance is a direct clone too. (Google)
Anyway, the game is pretty fun. Still needs a few balance tweaks with some cards though.

fragman85 04-13-2009 06:27 PM

Graal is a ripped Zelda, with personal tweaks (Online), so who cares?

Called it, Freaking called it first! To Glad and DC! oh ya. It may be pretty much the same concept, but FF8, no offense to the Graal card game creators, but it was way more advanced. A lot harder to learn.

Night knows my issues on this, whoever decided to make it so strict, DESPITE trying to put security against laming, well they pretty much made it a buzz kill. I'm standing around right now pissed off because someone wants to battle and i can't because i lost. That's way to strict, i don't care how much you wanted to stop abuse, this probably was not necessary, it seems more like someone wanted to make rules for the sake of making them. I also think wins should count for people who do lose, unless the waiting time is getting decreased.

Secondly, 120 points for the best booster pack? Again, i feel someone wanted to just annoy us all. Number 1 rule for a developer i feel, DON'T TRY TO PISS OFF THE PLAYER. Seriously, that pissed me off, way to steep of a price. And if its to try to decrease people getting rares, well, script that, don't make us have to get 120 every time we want a good booster. Even if the waiting time goes down, its still to pricey, it should be more like 80-90, MAYBE 100. To make us wait 30 minutes just to play, and make it not hard, but irritating to get boosters AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME, is a big buzz kill ill say again, even 10 points to buy a booster that potentially has crappy cards is indeed a bad idea, the weakest booster should be cheaper, but i guess again, if the time is decreased, that would be easier to get. And don't tell me I don't know what i'm talking about, i've always been big into card games kthx.

Overall, I was telling gladius
Game play = Great
GUI= Great
Its all fun to play with, which is why its so irritating to have to wait 30 minutes :)

Guess the Card Committee has to come to the rescue! Try not to make this so strict please, it will ruin the first good thing classic has had in a while.

I got 3 signs a beer and something else that waslevel one.... ripoff

BlackSolider 04-13-2009 06:50 PM

Thanks for the post tats.

When DC and night are both on, we'll begin to discuss some of the issues brought up by various people. Here's a list of things that will be considered:

- 30 minute wait time (too long according to public opinion)
- High price of boosters (mainly the last one)
- Ownership of cards (colorized instead of hold right click?)
- Free booster to all people? (my idea since these decks really suck ass)

Added on:
- Gotenks suggested slots for multiple decks in the card manager, thus the player can choose which he wants to use in a game. Right now people don't have enough cards for two decks (minimum is 20,) but it could be a decent idea for the future.
- A down/up arrow telling you when you can look at extras/deck, respectively. That wasn't worded well but I hope the point is across.
- Starting with a hand of 4 cards.

A few technical issues will need to be investigated as well:

- Reports of people gaining points against a non-point giving person
- Dropping a card to the side of the highlighted card
- Turn auto skipping (w/ no hp dmg) once someone's turn is skipped via timer
- Night getting a lvl 1 and TWO lvl 2s in his booster >:O

If anyone has any other issues they would like to be addressed, post it here or find one of us three (DC, night, or myself) and will do our best to bring it up.

Thanks to everyone who has tried the card game so far.

Shadow87 04-13-2009 06:52 PM

No, thank you Gladius.

Luda 04-13-2009 08:24 PM

So what if it's almost the same concept of FF8's card game? What is Graal?

Gotenks_Gore 04-13-2009 08:35 PM

hmm no glad i think you got everything
Edit: add starting with four cards to the bug list its happend twice now.

MysticX2X 04-14-2009 12:02 AM

Not playing cards after you lost for 30 minutes is just as relevant as saying you cant spar for 30 minutes if you lose.

LordSquirt 04-14-2009 01:17 AM

I don't think obtaining 140points in the game is possible.

BlackSolider 04-14-2009 01:29 AM

Not with the current wait time. It's something we'll talk about when DC gets on.

xnervNATx 04-14-2009 04:33 AM

now that trial were able to get deck , many players now use a cheating deck!!! lame

BlackSolider 04-14-2009 04:35 AM

Breaking news:

Waiting time after losing has been changed to 15 minutes!!!!

Also, the prices of the boosters were changed:
Basic: 10
Standard: 25 (40 earlier)
Plus: 80 (120 earlier)

Good work DC.

Unpredlctable 04-14-2009 05:04 AM

five thumbs up

Gotenks_Gore 04-14-2009 05:53 AM

nice @ timer/prices

how 2 do 5 thumbs up?
Seriously someone fix the stupid turn skip, i get skipped nearly every game

Shadow87 04-14-2009 08:19 AM

Thats great about the prices, i still feel 15 minutes is a bit much though. 10 would suffice i feel.

-Ramirez- 04-14-2009 09:38 AM

I think the image used for the back side of the cards is amusing.

BlackSolider 04-14-2009 03:14 PM

15 is vastly better than 30, so be thankful.

We'll continue to look all the the aspects to see if they need changing though.

fragman85 04-14-2009 03:14 PM

I just bought a Booster Pack and got 5 Level 0s :[
