Monthly Spar Tournament: April 2009
Yes, it's that time of the month again. The Monthly Spar Tournament kicks off in 5 and a half hours time, at 7PM Eastern Standard Time (that's midnight for us GMT folks).
Will Ikari Darkmane be able to retain their title for another month, or will another fighter be able to step up their game and claim the title? ^^ |

It's at 7 pm Eastern for anyone who is lazy to log on client and find out or lazy to know when Storm posted it.

Grats deo.
@ Kia345 Night (our boss) has been doing it for a long time. I don't know if he started it or picked it up from somewhere. I joined GC back in 07 and its always been like that. The reasoning, I believe, is that classic can regularly get 16 players for a spar tournament. Using a bracket style, we'd have to get 32 people. This simply won't happen on classic. We barely get a playercount of 32, muchless 32 people willing and able to spar. How are are we going to get 16 people for a tournament? We certainly can't take the first 16 pms. We certainly can't take the first 16 people to the tournament area. Thus the idea of "qualifying rounds" makes sense. A total of 8 "location spars", as in first two to spar arena X get a shot, and 8 "summon spars", as in first two to pm the GC get a shot, make for a fairly even distribution. The people not native to classic can still theoretically get a shot if they pm the gc, since they might not know the locations. If you can think of a better system, do post it. The qualifiers work pretty well, and aren't usually a problem. (remember this is all my understanding, so there is a chance it isnt factual. small chance however) |

I was kind of unhappy with a couple people getting numerous chances in qualification spars. Who knows what happens with next month. It's up to Night |
BTW I'll try to have the video of the monthly done sometime this week.
I have about an hour of recording to go through, so it might take some time. |
In a shock twist, an unlucky Ikari Darkmane was unable to secure a position in one of the qualifying matches, thus denying him the opportunity to defend his reign. Here are this month's results in full.
Qualifying Rounds Mystic's Qualifying Rounds
Gladius's Qualifying Rounds
First Round Elimination
Quarterfinals
Semifinals
Final
So that wraps up another monthly spar tournament. Deophite walks away with 10 tickets and a statue of his likeness in the GC Studios for his victory. He also gets the most valuable prize of them all: bragging rights. Smokey takes 5 tickets for reaching the finals. The spar tournament is held on the second Saturday of each month, which by my reckoning means the next one will be on the 9th of May. Catch you then for more tears, sweat and bloodshed. |

Quarterfinals 3 and 4 should be 1 and 2.
Semifinals should be Ares vs Deophite as 1 and whoever as 2. |
Does it matter what room they were in?

You do know how a normal bracket works, right? You need 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 players for it to work properly. Most tournaments, in any game/sport/anything else, use a bracket. Why? Because it is the easiest way to organize a large number of teams, then to narrow them down one by one until you have a champion. I doubt there'd be 32 people willing to play(necessary number for bracket to work properly,) though clearly we have more than 16 people who would want to enter. But a bracket won't work unless you have 16 or 32 people. I can't think (off the top of my head) any format for going through 24 or so people (random number greater than 16) that works well like a bracket does. Maybe you can. Do post it if you have one. Edit: Wow. Did you really just compare musical chairs on UN to our sparring tournament? Since when is a sparring tournament the same thing as musical chairs? Musical chairs is basically an LMS where one person is eliminated each round; half the contestants in a sparring tournament are eliminated each round. Wow. That is a horrible example. Of course you can get any number of people for musical chairs, you're only eliminating one at a time. |
i think he's just angsty because he didn't get a chance to play
|
He lost in a qualifier that I hosted.

How many players were online?

Actually Gladius, it could of been possible for a 32 man considering how many people didn't want to come because they didn't feel like running around and the fact Classic reached a 40 count.
|
A) We have 8 spar arenas in the 1st round of the tournament area. Aka 16 people.
B) I never got close to even 20 pms at one point. The highest I ever got was about a dozen early on. I don't think we could have gotten 80% of the players. As for people not coming to classic b/c they "didn't feel like running around": if indeed it was a 32 person tournament, that means SIXTEEN summon spars. Do people really not get the concept of "pming the gc" to get in? There's no running around involved. Maybe the people are misinformed or something, idk. C) Considering it takes about an hour to do this tournament as is, it'd probably take an hour and a half to two hours to do a 32 man tournament. That's just too long duda. |
WHY THE MONTHLY, WE CAN ***** AND MOAN ABOUT EVERYTHING ELSE BUT THE MONTHLY NOW??!!!!!! DOUDFQOQO *boom*

Like I said before, they aren't "my" methods. We've been using them since I got hired as GC.
Maybe you missed my statement. Maybe you just ignored it. I don't know. But I'll play it on the safe side and post it again: if you can think of a better format, then do post it. Otherwise you're just talking non sense. Heres an example. Say you get 26 people for musical chairs. Since only one person is eliminated each round, you'll have a winner 25 rounds later. Thats not a tournament. Thats an LMS event. For a spar tournament, half the people are eliminated each round. That is a massive fundamental difference. It only takes 3-4 rounds for a spar tournament to be complete. Hmmm....25 rounds....4 rounds...now my math skills aren't the best ever, but I do think that 25 is slightly larger than 4. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though. Look zojo. We've done our monthlys this way for years now, and its never been a problem. We give anyone willing 16 chances to get in our tournament, then find out who the best sparrer among them is. Sounds pretty logical. Sounds pretty efficient. Like I said before, unless you can think of a better format, go back to UN. Clearly you like it better than classic anyways. |

Now let's do the math. Assume you have a different person in each spot for every qualifying match. 8 Location spars, 2 people each, 16. 8 summoned tournament, 2 people each, 16. 32 overall people required. But look at your qualifying matches this time around. Tats appears 3 times. Thor twice. Every time somebody makes a repeat appearance you can knock a number off that 32. For the sake of argument let's say Tats appeared in every location spar and lost and got a spot in the summon tournament. 8 People to Face him in the location spars, 15 people for the summon tournament, then Tats. That's a requirement of 24 people. Seems pretty easy to me. Now lets also take a look at if we adjust the number of location spars vs summon spars. Say you do 10 location spars and 6 summon spars. More chances for you to need less people for summon spars. Again, assume Tats had a chance in every location + a spot in the summon. 10 People to face him, 11 for the summon, plus Tats. That's 22 people required. Also by doing a bunch of location spars followed by a bunch of summon spars instead of just flopping back and forth players who don't know the server can wait for their chance in the summon spars. The summon spars also can't be hogged by one person. Just by clumping the location spars and summon spars and not doing them at random I've done the following: -Given a method that allows you to adjust based on player count. -Given a method that allows you to limit a person's chances by adjusting location spars vs summon spars. -Given a method that let's the players who can't find the locations a heads up as to when their chance will be with the summon spars. That's really my only complaint. Flopping back and forth from location and summon just confuses people and causes frustrations. |
