Found a good source
http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/soundfx/warsounds.shtml has a bunch of royalty-free sound effects; it's not too tricky to find one, use Windows Sound Recorder to pare it down to the parts you want, and vastly improve on a server's multimedia aspect. :-D

I don't think I've ever seen an SFX staff make a sound clip from scratch.

Euh, the bowling sound clips were one of my LATs out back with a bunch of glass bottles and a really good microphone; the Bruges Bird and the Whistle are both resampled bad-microphone recordings of me...
