A new project

Well, I've got a new idea. :)
What about a main city where you can buy guns and stuff. (No, wait, it's not like Era x_x, just read the rest...)
Within the city compounds, there will be stores selling guns and stuff, ATMs, restaurants, and places to be make your own food.
The city is surrounded by barbed wire and metal fences. Why? Because outside there'll be dinosaurs. :D
To make money, there'll be two possibilities, mining and selling dead dinosaur parts (like their bones, teeth, skins, etc...) which can also be used as food. For example, from a T Rex thigh, you can make a T Rex steak, which can be used to fill up your "hunger bar".
There will be four factions, each HQ will be based outside each border.
The dinosaurs will have different territories, HP, specific damages depending on species and size. Certain types of dinosaurs can be tamed and ridden. :p
Species of dinosaurs will stay within specific territories, yet randomly walk around and can attack players.

What do you think? Please take part in the poll. Thank you!

We are hiring all dev positions, so contact me by PM, or on MSN ([email protected])

Because far more experienced and capable people than yourself has failed over, and over, and over again in the past with simpler projects.

zibou 01-07-2009 08:06 PM

I don't care i wanna try. I just need help for graphics and scripts...

And I wish you the best of luck with it, but the same second you aim too high, you'll end up with nothing at all. Keep it small, and build onto what you have later on.

Tyhm 01-07-2009 10:08 PM

Start with stolen graphics/ganis (Era and Kingdoms). This will give you the opportunity to focus on more important things like scripting; then when you're ready to get reviewed, you can go back over it and fix the graphics (particularly replacing it all with the same style).

Also re: the reactions to The Hunger Bar - that's because people are used to the default (Classic) where you Don't get penalized for going too long without eating. So go the other direction: if you don't eat, whatever, nothing bad happens but you'll be behind the curve. Filling up your Tummy-bar gives you a temporary bonus heart, surge of energy, temporary carrying power (enough to drag a full T-Rex corpse into town yourself by the tail), whatever.

Is it authorized ?
-------------------
I think I'll just delete the "Hunger Bar" and the food will be used to heal.
But, may someone help me to do this project ?

Elizabeth 01-08-2009 05:54 PM

DINOSAURRRRRRRRRRRRRRSsssssssssssssssssss

Zeltino 01-08-2009 06:16 PM

Interesting Idea. Good luck.

Tyhm 01-08-2009 06:56 PM

I don't see why it wouldn't be alright. If you're worried, take the 30 seconds to go into MS Paint and type "PLACEHOLDER" over all the copied graphics, that way the PWA can't accuse you of trying to pass them off as your own.

Can't help though, I'm busy on my own projects.

zibou 01-10-2009 11:03 AM

But i've a problem, i can't find the dinos from GK in my Graal folders...
I wanted em to test some things...
Can someone give me or tell me where are them ?

He can also get open source images
And even so, with copyrighted images you cant get your playerworld in trouble, you just can't make it to Hosted/Classic tab with them.

There's a dinosaurrr knocking at my dooor... la dee da!
Pretty cool idea, I must say. Modern with the olden times. The dinosaurs have been hidden in secrecy regrouping to take over the human race!

k_killar 01-11-2009 03:36 AM

Or outside the barb wire fences is high doses of radiation and there are monsters that eat u brains

thesmoothcriminal 01-11-2009 08:43 AM

Yeah was thinking the same for a Server :O
You Start in a big City in some Camp and the rest of the City is full of zombies
and than you can go into the City with some friends to capture some Spots like a School or something like this to earn Points
after that you have to hold the captured Spot for a period of Time where zombies spawn all the time and attack you
If you finished that the Spot is under control of the Humans
and maybe you can buy items there than which are cooler than in the Camp with the Points you got
Later than the zombies attack the Spots under Human control and you have to defend them :O

Tyhm 01-11-2009 02:13 PM

Could be fun to do it America's Army style, where anyone who isn't on your team appears as a Zombie...

Elk 01-11-2009 03:05 PM

A Hellsing Anime mmorpg would be cool

zibou 01-11-2009 03:30 PM

Nuuuuu ! Dino Powa !

Nice....now see, if all your finished-product graphics look like that, you'll have a unique look to your server.

Honestly, this is why it slays me that we have no active scripting support community; if I had a server that was going in another direction, one with effectively no overlap so that we could be neighbor servers without being competing servers, I'd gladly give you my movement and system and monster scripts...but I don't have a server, and the people who DO have servers jealously guard the scripts they spent years developing...each...instead of sharing and saving a few years of independent parallel development....

A 2d zombie mmo would be sweet but lag with tongs of zombies on screen maybe a deal breaker

I agree the scripting community needs to be worked on somehow. To few of them.

I dunno about that; what if the tons of zombies are actually relatively few NPCs each controlling a mob of zombies? Like, 1 NPC is 3 Actual zombies in a line, then 100 zombies as showimgs behind it (or until the next wall) milling about? You kill one of the 3 Real zombies, it's "destroyed" and one of the showimg zombies becomes solid...though I think we're drifting a bit off-topic.

zibou 01-12-2009 12:10 PM

If you don't share some scripts with other servers who needs them, they will make another one which will be similar, it's just a waste of time...
So let's share scripts between servers ! I'm sure that it will help lots of servers !

And about our gfx and scripts, Angel and Codein are helping us :)
And remember if you think that you have some script that can be helpfull for us... Just share ! :D

And if you want to make a zombie server make another topic :O!
Here we are talking about a modern servers with dinos x.x !

kabouter 01-12-2009 04:32 PM

Sounds cool!

Tyhm 01-13-2009 01:01 AM

A thought before you get too deep into it:
make sure any Quest Drops are handled in a sane manner, please? "Bring five T-Rex heads" can't possibly require killing 500 T-Rexes hoping one will randomly drop the item "T-Rex Head". Have the quest-giver insist on Perfectly Intact heads, have taxidermy be an important skill, and for the love of pete let the player drag the entire corpse of the T-Rex in if they want to (and have the requisite strength)...this "field dressing or leave the whole thing" is a bit silly, there ought to be other options.

zibou 01-13-2009 10:48 AM

We thought about classes that you can choose once (if you wanna choose another one you must pay like 100$, again ? It will be 200$ etc...)

Idea of classes:

Medic: They got an High speed, can carry more medkits than other people and have speed increased (so they can run fast to dead players then to revive em (But it will take a short time while the medic won't be able to move)
And they mostly use pistols and melee.

Hunter: The basic class with normal speed, they can drag medium-sized dinos and they use Rifles / Pistols / Melee.

Haevy Soldier: They have less speed than hunter and they can use rifle, melee and heavy guns, like chaingun. They can Carry all size of dinos.

Tyhm 01-13-2009 03:02 PM

An idea I had for Kingdoms (no idea why it got shot down)-
Couriers
A mostly Newbie class; when an experienced dino hunter has too full of an inventory, he can load up his pack, put a padlock on it, and hand it to a newbie to deliver for him. When the newbie delivers the pack to the hunter's house, a little drawer opens and pays the newbie the agreed-on price. If the newbie doesn't deliver it, the hunter can cancel the contract and the pack drops wherever it is for someone Else to deliver it (or drop for the hunter to pick up, or snap back to where the contract was made); if the newbie logs off, the pack reappears where the newbie logged off.
Give newbies (who generally have a lot of inventory space but not a lot of strength or skill) a chance to see the server and make some money without the high-end weapons.

Thats actually pretty cool. Adds some interactivity to the whole thing too.

zibou 01-13-2009 04:15 PM

That's a good idea but, i need scripters to make it... And theres no real scripters on Reptilia :S

Tyhm 01-13-2009 04:48 PM

I thought you had Angel and Codein?

When I'm done with my offline project, I'll help out in exchange for a side project area. That way I can make AND share scripts. Bwaha. ;-D

zibou 01-13-2009 06:23 PM

Angel is american so i don't rly see him!
And codein can't work on 2251 things at same time, he's already working on a gun system. If you want it come on then ill give you rc and what you need and in exchange you help me a bit :D

Oh, and we get renamed the palyerworl as "Reptilia"

Tyhm 01-13-2009 10:59 PM

Noticed that.
Well, if you're up to scalping I'll send you the link to the backup of my Offliney progress and you can reap whatever you like from that system, or you can sit tight and I'll make the Onliney version later on, whatever blows your hair back.
I wonder, what are the different job classes going to let you keep once you've changed jobs? Will ex-medics still get a boost on Healing Kits? Will Hunters still get average stats? Will Heavies keep (some of) their strength boost? Will Couriers keep (some of) their speed boost? Are you planning on having an XP system? Is there going to be an overarching story to this? Will it break the mold of Perpetual Static?

Another class idea - Caveman/Savage/Cavewoman/Primitive. Fastest fighting class (as fast as a courier), fights in melee - often climbing ONTO their prey (attachobject, like riding a hostile) to slice it to ribbons. Uses Field Dressing to cut a dinosaur down to lightweight parts. If Reptilia winds up using a FF5-style Jobs system, the Keepable traits would be melee, speed, field-dressing and grapple. Possible top-level ability has them take limited Rider control over their prey - the controls are similar to many servers' Drunk effect and the dino charges at max speed, but you can smash it into walls or off cliffs (if you don't jump at the last second, you take damage and fall off when the dino impacts)

Don't sweat that you don't have anything to show for it yet, and trust me, you won't for a while. Pretty much the ONLY thing I learned in university was that any software product can benefit from A LOT of planning before the first header is called. If you have a major reference document with everything from "The king of the rival kingdom's first wife name was Loretta, is seen in one flashback, has red hair, [picture]; even if the rival king gets deposed, she still started the Courier's Guild in her days as a street urchin, causing the so-called Noble classes to look down on it" to "System handles: movement (clientside with verification and reporting serverside), combat (ditto), GUI (clientside only). Calls: Dungeon stocker (level NPC) via with(NPC)..."

You know as well as the rest of us that Graal2001 in general has done more to counter this effect than any other MMO-style game I've ever encountered.

To some extent, even the classic server in its day.

Graal is amazing when you think about it that way.
