I think he wants to borrow a dictionary.

adding some AA and/or fixing the contrast would help

If I'm wrong, someone point it out :p I'm no graphic artist nor a pixel artist :]

You guys are telling me you don't see streaking lines down it..

Liberated 12-31-2008 07:01 PM

i see a gradient from light to dark, top to bottom, but that's it, no other lines.

Unkownsoldier 12-31-2008 07:02 PM

The dithering makes it look strange if you look close .

Codein 12-31-2008 07:04 PM

I see them. It's the slight dithering that's causing it. You could try and add another layer of dithering on each colour block or just use more colours. With the colours you picked, the best bet is to use more colours. When shading, make smaller jumps between shades.

EDIT: Don't go over the top though. Post your results and we can work from there.

How about if I shift one over and then keep the next one the same then shift the next one over..

I only touched the shading aspect of the red area, but it has a lot of other problems. I should have probably put more contrast into it, and the highlighting I did is pretty piss-poor, so excuse that.

The design seems overall very boring, and the lines are not very smooth. The top of the shield, I think, is mostly taking credit for that problem.
Also, try not to use fully saturated colors... they can burn the eyes. Drop the saturation down a bit(I think I did so too much), and never use pure white/grey, add some slight color into it... blue, for this, since it's metallic.

I don't see anything that changed between first and 2nd shield
wrong attachement I guess?

Edit: This is boredom... For outlines I've been pretty much random >_< I could make it look more metallic, but I won't try XD

Well I just used Dusty's colors and added some slightly different ones.

That's nice and all mate but I am only using paint.

Soala 12-31-2008 08:28 PM

Dusty uses paint too, just like me
Yup yup, MS Paint !

It looks like there is alot of colors, but there is only a few lines on his, and such, that's called illusion....or experience, how you want ;)

MSPaint is all you need for pixel art. :oo:

Unkownsoldier 12-31-2008 09:23 PM

No one has ever taught me how to do so, so I don't do that.

Soala 12-31-2008 09:27 PM

No one ever told me how to do too, just try to improve by yourself by looking at others method.
It's just a question of time, always try harder ! It's the only way !

One day, you'll find that you're drawing the way you talk.

Kain4lyfe 12-31-2008 10:28 PM

Just study other people's art work to learn their styles. Try picking up on these styles and search the definitions that you do not know of.

You seem to be understanding the concept, but it still doesn't seem right.

Liberated 01-01-2009 11:25 AM

you tried to shade it all right, but blue and green aren't supossed to be different shades of red, atleast not in this way.

I did not see any blue, but I fixed the green:

I don't think you're understanding what's really going on with it, though. Your shading looks really 'scribbly' and messy, and doesn't seem to have any actual thought behind it. You have to think about how light will fall upon a shield of that shape, perhaps looking up shields can help. For example:
