When do you have RC up?

I was talking to someone about this the other day. When do you think RC should be up? I know this can vary depending on what staff position you hold also.
GP's might want to leave their RC up if they are the only ones with ban rights in the case of a hacker. Should you only use client-RC or should you have regular RC up?

If you can list what types of staff should have RC up, or client RC, and how often.

What is the most appropriate usage for each?

OH MY GOD I JUST HAVE IT OPEN ALL DAY I LOVE TO CHAT caps

xXziroXx 09-05-2008 05:51 PM

I have it open more or less all the time the computer is on, even if I'm not here. If I'm not, I put AFK in my nick (most of the time anyways ^^).

Bell 09-05-2008 05:53 PM

If you're working or available to work it should be on, if you're not then shut it down. It confuses players if they see rc's up because they figure that staff member is available to help them. They get really annoyed when they are ignored.

Nabru 09-05-2008 06:00 PM

Only when I'm actively working on something.

Galdor 09-05-2008 06:10 PM

rc is a place to discuss stuff and to upload content it has nothing to do with noob helping.

Tigairius 09-05-2008 06:20 PM

Well on Graal Kingdoms I only log on RC when I'm uploading something, but on places like Era, etc, I log on usually to hang out and chat.

Inverness 09-05-2008 06:22 PM

I go on RC when I'm working or available for work.

Being available for work doesn't mean I want to work but I'm there just in case there is a crisis with the NPC-Server or something.

Elk 09-05-2008 07:01 PM

I hate msn conversations on RC, most developers do, its a "Remote Control" not a chat, its for development purposes :p some "staffs" see this different, lol

[email protected] 09-05-2008 07:31 PM

only when i work i suppose... =o

Darklux 09-05-2008 07:33 PM

It's closed, except iam working on something.

maximus_asinus 09-05-2008 07:45 PM

I don't play Graal anymore but when I did I'd only log on RC when I was bored. I couldn't work and use RC at the same time because I was always tempted to talk.

WanDaMan 09-05-2008 08:05 PM

Only when I'm uploading or talking; I get distracted way to easilly with RC open! :p

if my computer is on, my RC is on. it'd be funny if your RC online time counted towards your server hours :P

when I'm away, I use the away system we have scripted for RC to let people know if I'm away or if I'm sleeping. If I'm on the computer, but not doing anything, I still check PMs and help people when asked.

DustyPorViva 09-05-2008 08:33 PM

Only when I need to.

pooper200000 09-05-2008 10:30 PM

I know some people go by the policy only when working. So do you think certain staff members should have RC up while some shouldn't?

Example: GP's on RC all the time, while a LAT should only have it up while they are uploading levels?

I guess if you were going by the only while working, a GP's work is to be ready to ban someone in the case of a hacker sometimes right? So can they pull off idling on RC more than a LAT could?

Well, even for a GP, what's the sense of having an RC open while not working? I'm kind of against idling as I don't see the purpose(takes a whole 10 seconds to open RC and log onto a server), and gives the false impression(especially for GP's and FAQs) that they are available to help.

I hate sending PMs out to FAQs on tags only to take 15 minutes for them to respond. I'd have rather not bother even sending the PM as then I usually wait for a response instead of doing other things.

one of the main reasons I like leaving RC up is for logging.

houdini logs on and does stupid stuff at like 3am and I like to see wtf he's doing :{

cyan3 09-05-2008 11:18 PM

I log on to RC when I'm working on something or just hanging out and chatting but I almost never leave it online when I'm away from the computer.

Don't speak for other developers; I think they would disagree with you.

Not everyone is a tyrannical work-***** like you.

I used to think like you years ago so I'm just waiting for you to get the sense knocked back into you.

Tigairius 09-05-2008 11:55 PM

RemoteControl is so very well a messaging program as well as a developing tool, Elk.

Inverness 09-06-2008 01:15 AM

I'm suddenly reminded of how Elk was talking about what race he played on WoW on RC.

Demisis_P2P 09-06-2008 01:21 AM

I used to keep RC up 24/7 so that when I woke up I could just scroll up and read everything that I missed out on.

I've always disliked when people stay on RC the whole night but that is a seriously good reason to keep RC on.

Switch 09-06-2008 01:33 AM

Whenever I can have it on

cbk1994 09-06-2008 05:58 AM

When I'm a scripting.
