Custom colored nicknames!

2 Attachment(s)
Thanks to Crow!

Players can now select a color for their nickname with a neat color picker created by Crow. You can select a color by clicking the options icon (little wrench, top left corner) then clicking on the color box to open the color picker.

Players that are in the same guild as you will show up in a green-ish color.

Coming soon, each gang will have it's own color to quickly identify them :P

Way cool! ^_^

Temp disabled because of somewhat high CPU usage. I'm back on friday <3

Is it still using default name display?

Yeah, didn't look like it.

[email protected] 08-21-2008 12:07 AM

hmmm, maybe make it a gani?

Tigairius 08-21-2008 12:23 AM

Nice :) Did you happen to use any of my techniques I provided in the code gallery or did you use a different method?

Stefan said a loop of players was less CPU intensive than using ganis.

Pretty stupid question, you could never make different players show with different colored nicks for specific persons (read: guild members show as one text, others another) with the default AP system soley.

I thought you could edit AP of other players (locally) clientside. :p

Hm, possibly, if so I think that'd be the least laggy method.

Though, I just noticed in the screenshots there are colors such as orange, so it is of course custom :P

It'd be cool if you could add buddies, and have them a certain color.

Era had something similar a while back, everyone's named was hidden, and you could only see guild & buddy names, but it failed miserably.

Frankie 08-21-2008 02:24 AM

it was so neat and cool but the cpu usage was horrible :[
crow was saying something like .5% cpu usage per nickname with showscriptstats? something like that. it was bad news bears.

Crow 08-22-2008 02:21 PM

Tig, no, but that was the inspiration.

Dusty, THANKS! I think I will try that, I'm using a gani right now, and it's oh so baaaaad.

Chris, the buddy thing I had planned, but I didnt add it yet because of the ewwish CPU usage.

maximus_asinus 08-22-2008 08:23 PM

Ask Massokre (jake13jake?). He scripted an AP system for Classic and a method to display it through names.

cbk1994 08-22-2008 11:09 PM

It's pretty nice, but it needs some improvement in my opinion.
  • In events, Green Team has a red name, Red Team has a green name.
  • Add some predefined colors (drop-down menu).
  • Cut off the dark names; names that are dark blue, red, black, etc are very hard to read.
  • Allow players to change the shadow color to either white or black (do not allow the full spectrum!)
  • The text appears slightly too close to the player, move it down a bit (I could be wrong).
  • The font is weird, is it not using the default one?

Otherwise, it's pretty good. However, it does have the bug that if two people are at the same spot, the names will flicker over and under each other (noticeable at unstick). I'm not sure if there's a way to fix this or not.

They probably have the text hiding and redrawing itself every 0.05 seconds, causing that to happen.

Frankie 08-22-2008 11:29 PM

instead of not letting people use dark colors, I asked Crow if he would want to make it so if you choose a dark color, it sets the shadow to white.

Crow 08-22-2008 11:50 PM

Which I might add later. I already cut off black. The flickering is caused by the 0.05 update tick, yes. The text is not too close, it's the default nickname position, and the font and fontsize are taken from the options.

DustyPorViva 08-23-2008 03:06 AM

Hide -> show + loop = high CPU

Only hide if the number of players ends up being less than the last number in the loop.

devilsknite1 08-24-2008 04:35 AM

Eh, just another thing that lags me on Era :'(

Good job I guess

This is because you were on the Red Team.
People on the same tag as you have green names.
People on opposing tags have red names.

I would make it match the team color, would be cooler like that :p

CharlieM 08-24-2008 08:12 AM

I think its meant to be like bigger games were the enemies are red, team members are blue/green. I am watching cod4 being played right now, enemy team is red, friendly s are green, and its pvp team so ya..

I actually got nothing that changes the nickname color of people with different tags than yours o.O

Since Chris neg rep'd me about being so "negative" I have to say sorry :(

Eh, not really. But now after trying this out, it's pretty cool. Just going on there first and looking at it I was like, "wtf is this". But now, it doesn't really have the biggest USE, but it's sure pretty entertaining :D

Except for one part. It lags me rofl.

It shouldn't. Not at all. I reduced the CPU usage drastically :/ But I guess I will add an option to switch between old and new nickname system.

Don't forget mouse-over :)

Frankie 08-25-2008 01:31 AM

we're not zodiac.

I prefer mouse over, and I know a lot of others do as well. Maybe you could have buddy names always display.

What do you mean "like Zodiac"? It's not like Zodiac has the only mouse-over system (or, the best).

Frankie 08-25-2008 03:22 AM

I was simply using it as an example, lol.
