Fonts

When are fonts going to be uniform for each platform?

No matter what server I go on, I almost always see screwed up fonts.
Attachment 44889
This looks perfectly on Windows, with everything fitting in the scroll fine.

This happens on every kind of text, even when using showtext().

File download: comic sans ms.ttf not found

This appears in F2, so I guess a solution would be to upload these files for now?

EDIT: Uploading the files doesn't really help ... Still far too large.

there would have to be some kind of universal graal font that is packaged with all the clients, or thats how most games do it for cross platform games I believe.

Stefan told me he was going to make fonts display on Windows like they do on Mac/Linux, which means that just about everything will have to be remade to look correct.

Agh, I hate to correct things that have been working for ages because somebody suddenly decides to change something -_-

Agreed ...

However, they display like crap on Mac/Linux while perfectly on Windows, so it will be a good thing, even though stuff will have to be changed.

If you don't set the script to display a font, it will display the default font for your Graal. That means if you have a different default font for your different Graals on each platform, the fonts will look different in the script.

If you set the font with the script, you shouldn't have a problem though.

edit: dunno if this is what you're looking for, or in any way helps... just thought I'd throw it in there.

No no, the problem is that the SAME font displays differently on each platform, even when set.

Thanks though ;o

DustyPorViva 06-15-2008 04:09 AM

That's odd... I'm not grasping this though. What font are you trying to set? Because if you want Comic Sans, then the second picture is correct, it's the first one that's not.

No, no. I mean that the exact same font renders differently depending on what platform you are on.

On Windows, the text fits perfectly into the box, but on Mac, the text is significantly larger.

DustyPorViva 06-15-2008 04:41 AM

Well, what font were you trying to set, is what I was asking. If I gathered correctly, you wanted the text to be set as Comic Sans... the second one(mac) is correct, in that case. The first one(Windows), is not.

No, no, no :(

The fonts set correctly. Both of those were from Mac, showing how the fonts go over.

The problem is, while the fonts SET okay, they render differently.

For example, if I have a font that I set to be Comic Sans, then on Mac it will look slightly larger than on Windows.

DustyPorViva 06-15-2008 05:20 AM

Ahh... those pictures were very confusing.
I think it has something to do with the font AA the different OS's use. Try disabling any font-AA on both platforms and see what happens?

No, the problem, Stefan has told me, is that Graal displays the fonts differently; he said he would fix this and make Windows work like Mac/Linux (meaning everything will have to be redesigned)

DustyPorViva 06-15-2008 05:32 AM

Oh... oh well then. Don't hope for an answer though. I've been watching Stefan from afar for a long time now, and I have yet to accurately calculate his browsing pattern. He is very, very random on the threads he chooses to read and respond to. I think he like, closes his eyes and points his finger at the screen to choose his threads(unless it's about pizza or Mario Kart, of course. He searches for those topics daily).

Aha! now you have posted the key words, he will be sure to arrive soon!

The font system will be the same on all platforms in the next version.

DustyPorViva 06-15-2008 09:47 PM

You're welcome, Chris.

Heh, all nice and stuff, but why are you already going v6? You should go for v5.2 or whatever is next first.

Someone has to say it...

Did that really just happen?

Servers should however make stuff working for different font sizes anyway, there is gettextwidth() and gettextheight()

The client should be making stuff look the same no matter what the platform, so that the developers do not need to make things look bad just to be compatible.

If text is displayed at wrong positions then the client cannot magicly guess where the scripter meant to put it. There are many cases where it might be useful to change the font size, e.g. when players use a high resolution display.

Perhaps if the client included several common fonts (Times, Sans, Verdana, etc) with it so that you know these fonts will display the same on each system.

Otherwise, you can download a font.

I'm guessing that you could use some kind of open source font rendering to make sure these fonts display the same.
