Re-make or make new?

This should be interesting.

You have a playerworld and a full team of dedicated developers. Would you re-make an old project, or would you make a new idea?

cbk1994 05-17-2008 04:51 PM

Depends. I voted to remake, because there are some awesome playerworld projects which have died (for example, Sands of Glory died when it just needed a few changes).

Darlene159 05-17-2008 05:35 PM

Depends really.
There were some really good servers in the making, or that just were forgotten, but remakes have never gone well.

Pimmeh 05-17-2008 05:36 PM

originality! New one, afcourse!!

xXziroXx 05-17-2008 11:04 PM

I personally couldn't imagine working on another playerworld project other then Mythic, so for good or bad, I'd chose with remake.

However, it generally depends on your server idea etc. - but in most cases I'd go for remake!

But what if there was a great server that died due to lack of development staff? That good idea will never have a chance to flourish.

Horrified 05-18-2008 05:21 PM

It looks like it's mostly split between both. Not that surprising, heh.

MysticX2X 05-18-2008 07:17 PM

Make a new one. You'll get credited more.

Re-creating a server's advantage's:
  • Finish what someone got started
  • Can save a lot of time
  • Bring back fun and good memories

Re-creating a server's disadvantage's:
  • Not get much credit (But who cares)
  • Confused on where to start

Either way remaking or not is still a good idea. I would love to see some of the old dead servers revive, such as Maloria, or Babylon.

This may apply to "Confused on where to start", but it's still worth mentioning that another problem is people's differing views on what made the server so good. I'm assuming any recreation of a server is intended to not be exactly how it was, but rather preserve what's important, while making use of modern mechanics.

DustyPorViva 05-19-2008 01:27 AM

I say new. If anything, I would reuse an overworld of one of the many servers that have fallen into oblivion because it's one of the things I can't do on my own.
There are numerous problems when you reuse old content... most of the time you have to redo it all anyways. On the far end of the spectrum, people redo it to the point it's not recognizable and just slap the old servers name on it hoping to garner attention of those who loved it.

If you're going to put that much effort into a server, why not simply make it your own?

cbk1994 05-19-2008 01:32 AM

That's true Dusty.

If we decided to rename Vesporia to Sands of Glory (which Vesporia evolved from) we'd get a lot of publicity for a completely different server.

Yeah, and all you'd ever get is 'well SoG was better here...' or so.

Haha, the funny thing is SoG was divided into those who completely loved it, and those who completely hated it.

Dumb KuJi with his Graal X

I never said it was bad. You missed the point, as you didn't play SoG.

Anyone who actually played it would understand me plenty well ;)

For one aspect, yes it is. Plus the fact remakes don't do very well due to my previous point.

You're right, but then again I don't think any servers have done very well regardless.

Ryyan 05-26-2008 09:20 PM

we were originally going to use the old opan gmap on aeon, but after awhile we decided we couldn't really make the levels for the 25-50 empty buildings when we were done. so we're making a new one and using the old one for temporary.

I got that SOG joke.

Crono 06-03-2008 10:31 PM

Depends on the team and the server to be re-made.

Generally I think it's better to start new but recycle old content that isn't being used anywhere. But then again all playerworld's I've worked with are either existing or re-makes, not new.

Switch 06-05-2008 02:05 AM

I chose the make a new one.
Really, the coding can get messy with people's different styling compared to the other peoples, and the levels can look crappy due to, again, style.

Re-make generally implies that you remake the server, not necessarily use the same graphics/code?

In most cases *COUGH JIGGA/ORK COUGH* it does.

There's a difference between

"Remaking a server based on the original"

and

"LOL LETS SEE WHO I CAN GET TO PUT THEIR CONTENT ON MY SERVER :)"

Sinkler 06-09-2008 07:11 PM

Make a new one.. It's a lot more fun that way :D

Than why are you asking for Bravo Online?

Sinkler 06-09-2008 07:56 PM

Because Bravo Online CAN be remade to its former glory. Plus it'd be new to a lot of people.

DustyPorViva 06-09-2008 07:59 PM

That's what everyone says when they're remaking a server.
"I CAN return it to its former glory! This was the greatest server ever!"
Look on the server list and see how many of those servers are old classics... and for those that are, note the playercount.

Then why did you say it's better not to remake?

Why don't we move on and make something better?
