Global Curse Filter, with options.

As its says, would be beneficial to both the more mature players, and the younger kids. It would be global as stated, so that playerworlds, and such wouldn't need to worry about a filter. (Or is this already global?) And in F3, a new option would be created, "Allow Chat Filter (Uncheck to disable)" or something. Exessive swearing would still be inappropriate, but the occasional gesture would be fine, like "Sh*t", or "F*ck" and such.

So what is your reason for suggesting something that I personally believe is completely pointless?

As stated, the more mature player base, should not be rejected to see what someone says, because kids play. This would be a simple solution, and also, would help maintain a more efficient Word Filter (Allowing everyone to submit things in that they see to be vulgar, and such for the children playing), and since it would be global, it would allow everyone to have a decent filter on their servers.

And I ask why do you feel it is pointless? Because you see no reason why someone would want to see what they say? Or is it because you think this will fall-back and create trouble? (Would be default checked, for liability issues)

I think word filtering is a useless endeavor for anyone that goes to public school.

Also, a URL provided by Tigairius:
http://graal.net/index.php/Creation/Dev/Word_Filter

Though that specific Word Filter doesn't seem to be controllable by the client (which is something I would demand). I personally would prefer a scripted version rather than a built-in version so that the script can be adjusted to work with the playerworld's system.

Not everyone shares your personal opinion...that is reason enough.

cbk1994 04-25-2008 01:43 AM

If someone puts GK's swear filter on my server, heads are gonna roll.

No thats not a good enough reason why it should be built-in and not a public script distributed by the GST.

There is a benefit to having clientside filtering: there'd be no reason to avoid it. If people are allowed to speak how they want, and people also allowed to block out language they're not comfortable with, then everyone wins. Hell, it wouldn't even need to be complicated because no one would need to avoid it so you'd only have to filter out the actual words.
I would like to see one that had levels of filtering, minor, moderate, extreme... for different levels of vulgarity. I agree, scripted would be better than built in.

Rufus 04-25-2008 02:01 AM

Another advantage to clientside filtering would be that if people saw what they were actually saying without the filter, there would be no need to avoid the filter, just so that every single player received what you were trying to say and on the off-chance had the filter turned off.

Obviously a filter should be enabled by default. I understand and agree the above reasoning more so than forcing a filter on everyone that is just going to be annoying for some players by filtering out curse words (and every other word like on Kingdoms) and avoided any way they can find.

To go along with such a feature I was thinking of having a customizeable options tab in the client menu (F3). It would be similar to the profile fields where the options and their input type would be defined in the server options and then scripts could read this options and adjust accordingly.

That way a custom field could be added for enabling a word filter and even entering the words you wish to filter.

Edit: I believe the filter should be disabled by default.

Edit2: Why is "homo" included in the file example in the Word Filter page of the Wiki? Sounds like bias.

I think the purpose of suggesting a 'global curse filter' is not so that servers need to set their standards, and filter out words individually per-server. Generally on a global level there are standards set in the rules of conduct against the use of curse words, so to filter per-server seems a little silly when trying to enforce these standards on a global level. If there was, like Dusty stated, a good predefined set of obscenity levels of the words that would generally be filtered out, then I see no reason why it should be locally set.

Another thing that bugs me is your belief that the filter should be disabled by default. I really don't understand the logic behind that choice, but of course it's probably just your personal preference coming through. Again the use of curse words are against the rules of conduct generally, and as this is a game, the filter would logically be enabled by default so I don't understand where you're coming from with this. I personally dislike filters but I agree there should be one, and I have no qualms about turning them off to suit my preference, even if they should be allowed to be disabled that is.

Inverness 04-25-2008 03:06 AM

If the system is scripted it would be locally set anyways. So client would choose words to filter.

That isnt what I replied to. I replied to your post which said :

Meaning, some people dont appreciate seeing foul language when playing the game. Foul language doesn't usually bother me, but it makes me cringe to see children talk the way some do in game. Graal either needs a mandatory filter that allows you to talk normally without blanking out normal words, or make one that can be used voluntarily, with a disclaimer, which would probably be the better option.

Inverness 04-25-2008 03:44 AM

Mandatory filter = no no.

Thats what I'm hoping for.

cbk1994 04-25-2008 05:02 AM

Swearing is generally okay if it is not used with racism/hate.

For example, "Damn it, I hurt my foot on this desk" is different then "**** that idiot, he did ..."

My parents and teachers would disagree with you. And I expect certain Graal staff to act like my parents and teachers.

There are times for it.

I agree that sometimes it is disrespectful to swear, even if it is just "Damn, I hurt my toe".

Desear 04-25-2008 10:17 PM

So, in all, this seems like a decent idea, with some modifications, as suggested, levels of blocking, "light, moderate, heavy" or such?

Inverness 04-25-2008 10:45 PM

Like I said before, the system should simply be a script that would allow you to specify what words you want blocked and what to replace them with and any action to take when they're detected.

Your suggestion for levels of blocking suggest that its going to be some global staff person that defines what words are included at each level. I don't want some global staff person defining what words are to be blocked or 'homo' would probably end up in there if they were the one who wrote the Word Filter article on the Wiki. And 'homo' is not a word that needs to be filtered for anyone but a homophobic.

No, it should be a script that is distributed. There is no need for one built-in if it was just as easy for servers to install one.

just use my swear filter !!!!!!!!!!! ^^^^^^
