Animated avatars

I got a new avatar, its animated. Though, whenever I try to use it, it says "You are not allowed to upload animated images." or something similar. Well, why was it changed?
And while we are at it, can you change it back? Its not like they are using lots of space, mines 2.6kb, has 2 frames and they both got a delay of 3/4 seconds...
I seriously dont know whats wrong with animated avatars

Skyld 11-11-2007 10:44 PM

Animated avatars are annoying, just like moving flash adverts are.

There is no reason to have them enabled.

I agree with you partly.

Crow 11-11-2007 10:49 PM

Thats not a pretty good argument. I mean, they were enabled before..

And let's hope that they never are again.

Crow 11-11-2007 11:09 PM

No idea whats wrong with it. I've actually never seen a forum with annoyingly animated avatars...

I see quite a lot of forums with annoying animated avatars.

I do not see why you cannot just condense your avatar into one still frame and have done with, just like everyone else should do and does.

Not all of them are annoying.

That is personal preference and the forums should be catered for the majority. It's up to the user on what they want as avatar/signature, as long as it follows the rules. There's no real reason for animated avatars to be disabled, and it's not as though they've been 'abused' in the past or anything, see Konidias' avatar for instance.

Restricting features like this for trivial reasons is just stupid, they're trying to build a community here.

kia345 11-12-2007 01:15 AM

People get infractions for long sigs, why not just give someone with a seizure-inducing avatar an infraction?

Like Sam's bug in his sig? A lot of things are annoying, but animated avatars are not a big deal.

If I had my way, we wouldn't have animated images in signatures either.

Pimmeh 11-12-2007 10:50 AM

But why the hell not?If one is annoing, it would get removed by the mods, if one is offensive, it would get removed by the mods. Just like regular avatars.
Switch could also have the avatar in his siggy, and I wonder why he doesnt.
And, be honest, are there really that much annoing moving signatures?

DustyPorViva 11-12-2007 05:11 PM

Haha@forums being catered to the majority. If that was true it would be a lot different here. It'd be open to classic accounts, you would be allowed to post links, among many other different things. Just suck it up and realize the forums are ran the way they want it, which is reasonable, but don't expect to be catered to.
Personally I hate animations in avatar's and sigs, mostly because I'm on dial-up and people tend to like to use 2mb animations and such, and it sucks. I wouldn't mind if they had a size limit on it, though... but I think that's impossible to regulate if you use external links. Either way, I think it's done so they don't have to be moderated, just like links. Why moderate when you can just not allow it!

Your custom title is annoying me because I can't type the 'ae' with my crap keyboard so I need to go to the character map to type it. But still, it's annoying, so remove it and ban all the other custom user titles.

[EDIT@Dusty:] This is different. Being open to other accounts is their way of trying to make money. This is a matter of opinion. Who are they to say what is and isn't annoying?

Crow 11-12-2007 05:15 PM

Dusty, even if you type in an url of the image, VB will store it in the local uploads folder. Well, as far as I know it does that. So size checks would be possible, and the "Change your avatar" options has already a set limit of 19kb.

DustyPorViva 11-12-2007 05:18 PM

Ya, the 19kb limit is dumb... I know I've had a few times where I couldn't get a static avatar uploaded because of the 19kb limit. Way too small.
And they're well within their right to say what is annoying and what isn't. I'm pretty sure disallowing external links isn't to help make money. Point? They do what they want with the forums, how they want to. It sucks, but people have been trying to pass ideas through about the forums for years and they don't really care.

Your keyboard is not my concern, but instead, moving avatars that are frequently annoying.

Please stop derailing the thread.

But you don't have it your way for avatars or sigs, so why are people acting like avatars aren't animated because Skyld hates it?

Unless of course Stefan told you he hates animated avatars or something.

Huh?

All I've said is that I think they are more annoying than useful. I was not aware that people were acting like anything because of me.

Horrified 11-13-2007 12:32 AM

konidias's avatar is animated.

It was probably uploaded before the forums were set to disallow it.

It doesn't bother anyone though, it's a 2-frame animation of a body idling...so what's so bad about stuff like that?
