Heya, I'm new to making levels so I could use some advice on what to improve etc.

And yeah, I like the swamp tiles :P

xAndrewx 10-19-2007 08:16 PM

wow

Crow 10-19-2007 08:59 PM

Yea, "wow", as in completely overdetailed. You should use the standard grass tile alot more, seriously. When I saw those thumbnails, I thought you are using a tileset with darker grass or something :p
The design of those levels is fine I guess, but still, theres too much detail.

Too much swamps and in the first screen too much bushes. Try to use cut swamp and other subtle detailing in your levels.
I do quite like them

Very nice :) Cliffs need a little work and may I suggest not using the cut bush tiles? It makes it seem a lot more unrealistic. I never was a fan of those cut bush tiles. All in all, your well on your way to becoming a great levelsmith! :D

Where do I begin...

Your style isn't so good. You need to get an attractive style for paths, beaches, cliffs, etc so that when you do make paths and such they will look good.

Your detailing style is a bit ugly in my opinion. Don't just fill up levels with swamps. This is something I'd find in the mountains of Delteria 2002.

The waterfall...it's ok but I don't think you pulled it off nicely.

Your trees seem to be ok, I can't be too picky.

4/10 overall

alcatis 10-20-2007 09:22 PM

Ok, thanks :P These were the two first outside levels I ever made, but yeah, the swamp tiles.. I didn't really know how to fill all the green space in another way. Because when I make levels I think "No green spaces". I guess it's something that got stuck from art class, our art teacher always told us that she didn't want to see any white space at all on our paintings (unless it was a part of it).

Also, how can I make the paths better? Less bumps, more bumps, different tiles? Oh, and the waterfall :P I didn't find any other ways of making one. And for the cliffs.. I mean, there are thousands of ways of making cliffs. I got some advice from him on the cliffs, well, I made it and he told me it looked good so I made the other level using the same style :P He knows about 10 ways of making cliffs.

I've tried making cliffs with another smaller cliff beneath it, if you know what I mean? But it didn't turn out too good X_X

Takes practice thats all.

Pretty cool that its your first outside levels though.

alcatis 10-20-2007 09:59 PM

I'll keep playing with paths and cut down on the swamp tiles :P I'll upload some levels later.

Och hejja Sverige!! :)

Yea I agree. If you compared it to my first outside level then alcatis' level looks flawless. My first levels were god awful. So for your first you did a good job.

Beginners rating : 9/10

Rating not based on experience : 4/10

Has your art teacher not heard of minimalism?

I think the levels look good for a first attempt. However, they are pretty bad.

Cut down on the swap and don't use the automatic path generator. Learn how to make paths without it. They look better.

Elk 11-16-2007 10:54 PM

agreed with codein >:0
atleast use the path generator and then edit the things...i use the path editor to SKETCH it...then form it with tiles so it looks nice

MrAnonymous_P2P 11-17-2007 07:09 AM

THe cliffs at the bottom of the first one are way to strait. Trying jazzing it up a little ;)
