Shading an outline -Tutorial-

Someone asked me about this so I made a quick little tutorial about it:
Below is a crude wooden hoop that I made for the tutorial.
In the first image you can see the outline that I want and how I filled in the insides. Next you can see my fill scale (how the color gets darker the further away from the light source it is). For the outline of that fill color, I moved one down on my fill scale and outlined it with that. Next, I played around with the colors until I was satisfied and attempted to blend the shades together so that it looked smoothe.
You don't have to use lighter versions of one color, sometimes it's best to do a transition between one color and the next. You also don't have to make it look smoothe, but that all depends on the texture you are looking for on the object you are trying to make.
