Sprite

Started working on this sprite. If you don't know, I suck at sprites, hence why I like to stick to things like tiles and icons...
Anyways, here it is. I already know the shading is crazy, but I personally think it works to keep it simple, yet define what it needs to.

EDIT: after looking at it, I really need to address the feet.
EDIT2: I think I fixed the feet problem... attachment sprite2.png

Face looks kinda weird...probably cause he's cross eyed.
Everything else looks good though.

Made a few changes.

coreys 08-01-2007 08:17 AM

And you say you suck at sprites?
Seriously, is it possible for you to suck at ANYTHING?
Looks great.

Another update. Made a template, and was messing around with accessories.

Luda 08-01-2007 10:50 AM

He seems too stiff

xXziroXx 08-01-2007 12:13 PM

OH MY GOD! Faaaallloouuuut :D

Crono 08-01-2007 12:26 PM

too stiff around the shoulders

DustyPorViva 08-01-2007 12:27 PM

Still think so? I thought I made his shoulders pretty relaxed in the latest attachment, and I'm not sure how to make his shoulders any less stiff than they are in that one.

haunter 08-01-2007 03:18 PM

Try having the idle animated. That should help with any stiffness. Plus I don't know if anyone on Graal does that.

I guess it's the lack of a neck. Try putting his head higher?

Made a few small changes(like concaving the shoulder area), and added a new 'weapon ready' pose.

I edited it to show you what I mean, the one on the left is my version and the one to the right is yours. All I did was move the arms down a little bit and put some dark brown where the gap was.

The one on the right is the original...I think my slight edit makes him look much less stiff/hunchbackish.

The only thing I don't care for about your edit is that you've made the sprite look like it has a disproportionately fat neck. x_x

DustyPorViva 08-01-2007 05:43 PM

Well the thing is, not having a visible neck(and the head being lower) in this helps give it the correct perspective. But adding a neck(or raising the head), it looks like the perspective is more straight on than 3/4th.

Something about it is bothering me. He looks like a mentally ill patient. He has no pose. He is just some square standing around.

xXziroXx 08-01-2007 06:11 PM

Rofl, never thought I'd see the day when Crono gives gfxing advice.

Well to be honest I'd rather not have a 'pose' for idle. I could, but I find it's more trouble than it's worth. Not too many idle sprites really have a 'pose', only one I can think of at the time is SoM and SD3.

Better now?

DustyPorViva 08-01-2007 06:48 PM

The problem is that it's distorting the perspective, something that I tried pretty hard to get right on this one for a change. I mean, the crit is valid, but it's either be a little less stiff, or lose perspective. There are alternatives I can take to give the sprites a little more life and not be so stiff, but there's nothing I can do for the perspective if I change it.

Looks like I gotta wait for the animation. :(

Shakram 08-01-2007 06:56 PM

Crono i like your sprite more :D

DustyPorViva 08-01-2007 06:58 PM

I LIKE the change, as it definitely improves the stiffness of the sprite, but it hurts the perspective I feel.

It's more the problem with the arms than necks or whatever, maybe you can shift the arms up and down better than I did, lol.

Not sure if this will help, but I wanted to show off this game cause it owns :D
But yeah, Dusty has the right perspective so I'm going to have to go with his sprite.

Shakram 08-01-2007 09:45 PM
