Apng

It would be really nice if Graal could suport APNG (Animated PNG files).

They aren't that popular yet, but there are several editing programs for them.

Read about them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APNG (I'm providing this link to educate users on what an APNG is, so please don't delete it :\)

APNG would be better than animated GIFs for animation because it supports more than 256 colors.

Wondering if anyone else would like to see this implemented?

Graal needs support for vector images >: )

kia345 08-01-2007 03:55 AM

Whatever happened to .mng?

mng died.

I used to use it ... not anymore. Animated GIFs killed it. Does graal (v5) even support it anymore?

Googi 08-01-2007 05:47 AM

If people aren't willing to use MNGs, they aren't going to be willing to use APNGs.

DustyPorViva 08-01-2007 05:54 AM

MNG really doesn't have any type of benefit because it's basically converted from a GIF. So whatever limitations GIF has, so will the MNG created from it. On the other hand, APNG has the benefits of more colors. I mean... who needs more than 256 colors in one animation, but I'm sure some people will sooner or later.

Among the maintainers of the PNG and MNG formats, APNG was not received that well for several reasons. MNG provides all the features APNG provides, but is not supported at all by PNG-only decoders. APNG uses a technically feasible solution for storing any frames except the first, but some of the PNG group feel this conflicts with the purpose of the PNG format — which is to store a single image. APNG would be compatible to this vision with alterations to its signature and intended MIME type, but these would break the desired backwards compatibility.
The PNG group officially rejected APNG as an official extension on April 20, 2007.[2]
Your link tells us that the standard was rejected.

There is little point in implementing a rejected standard when people are not even prepared to use MNG.

APNG is in the new Firefox GP Alpha, so this is probably going to make it get considerably more popular (once v3 is released)

APNG support sounds interesting, should be quite easy to add.

MNG is practically an animated png, but not many programs support that, possibly because supporting the full MNG capabilities is quite complex or may be they just don't want to display animated graphics. APNG is also working in programs that only know of the normal PNG stuff and then only display the first frame, while advanced programs can display the full animation.

Was this ever added?

Don't think so. Therefore: bump! We want it!

DustyPorViva 09-04-2010 08:06 PM

Anyone know a program that can actually save APNG's?

kia345 09-04-2010 08:16 PM

GIMP has a plugin for it iirc

Yup. Also, JAPNG can create APNGs from many PNGs.

There's a lot of other stuff I'd rather have than support for a rejected, unknown animation image format.

Rejected and unknown, huh? At least it supports more than 8-bit color information.

No point in arguing priorities when it comes to suggestions. Seriously, let the programmers decide what's worth the time. Any developer knows that, "This is more important, so let's forget about that," is not how it works.

This is quite a good suggestion. It may not get the most use, but I have found myself wanting an animated image that also has alpha-blending(smoke?).

Wouldn't the particle engine still be more pratical than that?

Not in every circumstance, no.

Such as?

adam 09-06-2010 06:30 PM

Would it be possible to just make an easy to use converter to convert gif/apng/mng to gani's and frames.

And obviously convert frames to gani's.

What about heads or hats? Things that are already a part of a gani.

What do you mean "part of a gani?" Clearly if your aim is an animated image, it's not going to be a player's gani.

Stefan, you said it would be easy to add this, could we get support for that? :)
I have some neat ideas in mind that I could make use of this format.

I know there's a lot of different things that could use support as well, but If it's truly simple to add in, would it really hurt?
