Rimworld Alliance

Some background: A while back I had the idea there should be a central server, so that all servers could be neighbors instead of competitors...and maybe we'd focus on making our individual servers better objectively rather than subjectively better than the "competition". Bad idea ultimately, everyone resents there being a server that comes along and is suddenly more important than theirs.

Thus: I propose an alliance of playerworlds, united in a rim with no center. Each PW shares information (via that PHP Send whatsit Stefan was talking about), each PW contributes to the overall gaming experience.

An example: say we have 5 playerworlds. All 5 owners are sure their PW has what it takes and should be launching any day now (but of course, we outside all see it'll fail miserably, just like all the others). They band together, each focusing on a different specialty (though likely still working on other aspects as well): a server with a really good job system, a server with a really cool pvp battle system, a server with a tonne of weapons to buy, a server with a bunch of quests, and a server with a bunch of housing related stuff. Players can work at the Job server, carry their money to the Weapons server, take the weapons to the Quest server, take their hearts/XP to the PVP server, then go hang out in the SimHouse server.
Eventually each server could grow its own version of its neighbors and spin off, I suppose, but what's the rush?

And the selfish angle: Really, I'd like to make parts of a server without having either to design the whole independent thing, nor leave it in the hands of the server's owner until it changes hands and gets "reinvented".
Ferinstance, I kinda wanna make a Mr. Driller server. But that wouldn't make a good Server, only a good job. I kinda wanna make a Waiter job too, like all these Bartender Tycoon games my friend's always playing, but I don't feel like scripting GS2 Movement. I got notes for a whole sidescroller server, but I don't feel like making it solo, nor trusting other people to make my server...but I wouldn't mind making a shop on my server that their players can use...

Good, Bad, Dumb, Flawed, Needs work? I know intraserver security will be an issue, have to keep backups of the common currency in case 1 server goofs up/is compromised...

Basically if everyone who was working on a NEW SECRET PROJECT OMG MY IDEA IS SO GOOD playerworld right now came together to create something like this, we'd actually have a new good "server".

But obviously, everyones idea is so much better and is going to be so much more popular than this when it's released in never, so I don't see this happening.

This is actually quite possible, if you have good scripters that know how to communicate between servers. The next problem would be finding 5 servers x_x

Appealing to egos would be tricky; but if the PWA granted a Group Review...it'd be "My Awesome Doublesecret Server's the only reason these lamer servers passed inspection, I'm only keeping them around until my Million Times Better job system's done. Then I might let them share my quests, just to be nice."

Then the question would be: How do you resolve the "He stole my quest/system/etc.!" debates? If Joe Doublesecret is confident nobody will be able to steal his Doublesecret technology, he'll be more willing to share it (on his own server)...

Erm, you should be editting that into the topic-post :P

Another question is, is the effort to bring together this project even worth it?

I mean, it would require real planning and organization, deadlines, hard work, and professional communication between people.

All that work just for 100-200 players, assuming the project is finished. I dunno, the idea is very solid and all, honestly. Just don't think at this point in Graal's history any kind of large impressive project is even worth considering.

Not to sound egotistic, but I have had the idea and have started planning (With deadlines and all) a perfect (If it is possible) all-around appealing graal server.

I would be interested in this and would invest my hard-earned money.

*shrugs* If you think so, I'll see what I can do. I usually leave developments like that to be discussed later in the thread, but since so few people read past the first post, it's valid.

I'll grant that I've taken for granted the assumption that Things are worth trying on Graal. It might not be valid, it might be rearranging deck chairs on the titanic, but if we all accept that there's no sense in trying to do anything on Graal then there's no sense in being here.

 ? Okay, so you're making PerfectServeria and don't need any of our help. But you would be interested in this (Rimworld?) and would invest your money (in server-hosting?)
Regardless, you cut an iconic figure: you would, as a server owner confident in his server's individual might, be interested in linking with neighboring worlds. For their benefit rather than yours, I take it? In particular, how do you see your own server/players benefitting, or is it mere altruism/charity that drives you?

How very.. tactful Luda LOL

WHIPENIE4 05-20-2007 05:22 AM

the chances of them doing this would be a doubtful one, prety much like they said egos and who would own it, thered be a huge arguement there, theyd like fight about that and bam. miserable failure which would have come in the beginning anyways. Its a nice thought though

Hahahaha, I love the not-so discrete sexual references! Very creative...

Sounds fun Tyhm.

*shrugs* Graals have rims. Ringworld and Fringeworld were taken. But it's a good point.

Yeah, the big problem would be the owners that are sure they don't need the other worlds, and that are certain the others are just weighing them down...
What if instead, all UC worlds were automatically allied, either right now or on their path to the Classic tab? Take 'em all out of hiding, link 'em all together, and the Rim would be where they do their final development: "I got an awesome game, I don't think I need anything more, so I join the Rim. As soon as I'm done debugging the multiplayer stuff I can go Classic...oh man, that bowling thing's pretty cool, I should put some sports like that on my server...of course, mine will be a million times better..."
Assuming that solves Ego, next complication: Ownership and Theft.
"Hey, I spent months developing Bowling, then this guy came along, used my templates, figured out how I scripted it, and totally stole it! Now his world has everything mine had and more, and I don't have anything he had!" We'd need the PWAs to crack down on theft and encourage public trading: "You can copy my bowling (in fact, here's the script) if I can copy your combat system". We wouldn't necessarily have a bunch of identical servers this way: while there would be a lot of overlap, each server owner would pick different aspects and different implementations they like best, and the server would most accurately depict their personal tastes. Further, all of these servers would have the most developed scripts instead of having pale imitations of each other: see also when Kingdoms, G2K1, Classic and a few PWs all had different versions of Tetris that broke in different ways (because nobody was cooperating, and thus each world was doing more work and wasting more time than was necessary).

Obviously I do need help; if I didn't, it would be classic this very moment.

The server I have in my head is heavily based on a different genre of sparring PKing. Blending the old with the new. I mean sure we would have quests, jobs, etc, but the main focus would be the whole idea of being Numero Uno.

With that being said, if I were to merge with a few playerworlds that have a different view for there world, we could cover all the bases.
A home run is just imminent after that. :)
