First Pixel Art

1 Attachment(s)
Hi guys, I'm mainly a scripter, but I thought I'd try my hand at pixel art. This is basicly an M-16, but I didn't like the black, so made it more of a wooden/goldish. Looks more like an AK-47 now.

Oh well, tell me what you guys think. Give me suggestions :)

I'm scared to shrink it down enough so that it will work on Graal.

Its not pixel art ;/ You pixeled the outline, true, but you didnt pixel the rest.

First of all your gun is way too big. Next you have wood/gold gradients for a M4, which is completely made out of metal x_x After that you need to seperate each part of the gun like the clip and arm rest. I made a smaller version but it needs a lot of work. The basic outline was ok though.

Want to bet? That's all pixeling. I didn't use a single gradient tool, just a pen. Name your test, I can prove it. Look at it close up, there's no way a gradient could have done that.

Thrashsoul3- I was doing this not because I wanted a realistic M-16 (NOT an M4), but because I needed the practice. I mentioned, if you had read my post, that it was too big, I was just trying to get good at pixel art.

Ultimately, despite his silly questions, what difference does it make? You're creating art here. Are you more interested in the process or the final product?

Find a reason to work; when you face your own shortcomings you'll be more inclined to overcome them.

I'm actually working on a logo right now for someone at school, it's actually going pretty well. Thanks for being positive on this :D

I always thought that an M4 and a M16 were the same gun.

Oh, heck no. Heck no.

But this isn't the place to discuss guns, really.

The M4 is a shortened version.

And it roxx more.

Whatever, back to topic...if you really pixeled all of that...reduce your colors, really. 101 is way too much. Your biggest problem is...well I guess number 1 first -> details. You dont have any details on that gun. But you may add a lightsource before you add any details, your choice. You should also change the color o.O

Edit: Nowai! I forgot a step ;o My bad. You should really clean your outline first, lol.

Draenin 04-14-2007 12:17 PM

The shading is terrible. It looks like an outline with gradient color, and no discernible features. No gun in the world looks like that.

Gee, thanks!

DustyPorViva 04-14-2007 03:31 PM

Whether or not the gradient was a tool or done by hand, it's still a gradient. And in this case, if really done by hand, too much effort when it could have been spent doing better types of shading and coloring. I suggest using some slight gradients to round off metal cylinders and then topping them off with highlights. For the rest of the gun, remember that it's flat, so there's no need for gradients, but that's where you need to replace depth of shape with details.

Why?

For an M4 its too much. You can shade it pretty well and add some cool details to it with a maximum of 30 - 35 colors I guess. Maybe less.

DustyPorViva 04-16-2007 03:03 PM

Because if you did this by hand like you said you did, that's just a lot of wasted effort that could be better spent working on something else in the image.

Well, I'd say he used some sort of gradient tool - despite what he claims... either that or he is a tool >_<

DustyPorViva 04-16-2007 06:16 PM

That's why I kept hinting at 'like you said you did,' though I don't want to jump to accusations.

SayianOozaru 04-16-2007 11:32 PM

What does it matter if he used a gradient tool? (Wtf is that anyways?)

Shadings off anyways. Light doesnt just hit one part of a gun, and then the rest of the gun slowely gets darker...

I don't like it :x

I agree with Crow here. All you've done is the outline with a gradient fill.
And you should never use a gradient on GFXs. It looks tacky and makes you look lazy.
