Usually don't post here, but I'm having alot of trouble with this ship...

Its really big, and I'm no good at shading big things. >_<

Looks like you're on the right track - now all you need to do is ditch your buddies that whine about people who us photoshop and start brushing in the sides so they look smooth.

Your buddies can sit around and talk about how hardcore they are as they spend a week doing something you can do better over 5 minutes in photoshop. Then you can tell them to get a job, and see if their boss gives a **** and a rabbit how hardcore they are.

Hmm... well. First off, flat surfaces mostly have one shade, like the top of the ship shouldn't be shaded like that. It gives the impression the roof is a cylinder. You really need to study similar shapes and objects under light to get an idea of how to shade complicated things. Simple gradients aren't going to cut it. Just remember, for every protrusion there is going to be a highlight and a shadow casted. This should really be remembered with the side of the ship so you can give it some definition and shape.

i would do a small version of it first then make it bigger and detail it

I use paint shop pro 11 though...I think the only tool in the program that I could use would be the "smudger" but that makes it sorta blury... D:

Ya, I know D:

It's just hard for me to think of a boat when I've never acutally seen a "warship" upclose...I'm not sure about it's bumps/curves and things...So I'm sorta making it up as I go D:

Btw, you should actually fix your lineart before you start to color that piece o.O
