My Great Grandfather Turns 100 Today

Just like the title says. My Great Grandfather is turning 100 today. Which is amazing! He's doing pretty well, still sharp as a tack. For his birthday my mom and sister baked a cake in the shape of a 100 (picture coming soon) and we're going out for pizza. Anyone else have any old family members?

That's pretty damn cool. Tell him Happy Birthday.

And on Christmas Eve? Even cooler.

Do you get anything for it in the USA? Over here the Queen writes you a Birthday card (or so it's supposed to look like).

Yeah you do. If you turn it in to the Social Security department or the White House or something the President and 1st Lady send a card. I got to see his today, was pretty cool.

Unfortunately my Great Grandfather fell a couple of weeks ago and he went to the hospital. There he was put in the ICU because he was having trouble breathing (Pneumonia) and we found out that he has Leukemia (its pretty common for people of his age to have it and it's not as serious as other kinds of cancer) because his white blood cell was WAY up and they ran some tests. He was moved into a nursing home not too long ago and the entire family went to go visit him today. We only got to see him and talk to him. He couldn't talk back because he tore something falling and is in a lot of pain. They give him a little morphine every once in awhile so that he can rest. He's pretty out of it right now but he managed to recognize us and we got a couple of words from him. I'm not sure how much longer he's going to be around but it has been a major blessing that he's lived this long and gotten to see his GREAT GREAT Grandson (my nephew).

Aww, sorry to hear that, but 100 years is quite a long time. I bet he could tell some stories.
My sympathy goes out to you and your family.

WanDaMan 12-31-2006 09:10 PM

Did you ever get a picture of the cake? :(

Yeah, you do. I remember when my ex step-mom's mom turned like 80 she got a letter from the president. Of course it isn't actually from the president, but it's still a nice notion.

Sorry man, but 100 years is a hell of an accomplishment.

Sorry to hear that Smirt. But 100 years. He had my grandad by 20 years.

smirt362 01-05-2007 06:39 AM

Anyone seen the movie "Hope Floats?"

The house in the movie is located in Smithville, Texas where my Great Grandfather was born, raised, and lived for a nice chunk of his life. Apparently he designed and built the staircase in the house. The Church where the funeral scene was, is also where my Great Grandfather's funeral was and he is now buried in the graveyard there. It was a nice funeral, he still had many friends and relatives alive who came to say their goodbyes (none his age though). A priest who he befriended in Austin came down to do the service.
