RC being used as a glorified chat room.

Is RC allowed to be used as a chat room? Some servers believe that it is.

I don't know if the playerworld rules govern over Classic servers, but it states:

Quote:

RC should ONLY be given to those who need it, and the rights to only those who need a certain right.
Therefore, do you believe non-development staff such as FAQ and Events Team should be allowed to go on RC for the sole purpose of general discussion? Do they need it anyway?

I would say that that is up to the interpretation of the people in charge. Personally, I don't think so, but I'm not going to say that my opinion is better than someone else's.

I just don't see the reason why non-development staff would need it when the functions they would be using could be replaced by NPC's.

I personally believe that the RC is a tool for all staff members, not just for developers. That's why if i were to hire an Events Team Member, i would give him/her an RC. Also my ideal staff member to hire is one of much maturity. I and alot of others know it's annoying when you've got someone spamming the RC chat, and overall just activing stupid and childish.

So yes, i believe non-development staff members should be given an RC for discussion, since they are part of the "staff team". As i said before, the fact that someone is immature does cause many Managers and Admins to reconsider the ammount of RCs given so that the chat doesnt become a spam fest. Overall, it is up to the Management of that server.

nikomi946 10-27-2006 03:57 AM

Those in development aren't the only ones who need RC but there is only one reason that I can think of that FAQ or ET (outside of the admins) would require an RC. If a FAQ is trying to determine why a quest isn't working for a player and needs to check their flags to determine what they are missing. When this occurs they can just have a GP check. -Bell

Andy0687 10-27-2006 04:08 AM

I think this kind of stuff should be up to upper management of the server(s) in question

Infernix 10-27-2006 04:35 AM

Who cares, its a huge chat room until someone finally notices their server is dieing.

Lovely idea, however; unfortunatly a lot of the staff on servers can't actually get a diagnosis for a lot of the problems and leave the players to suffer  .

Crono 10-27-2006 10:15 AM

I say let the managers of the servers handle this themselves. I don't know about you guys but if you want to do something about RC being like chatrooms, you'd have to fire everyone on Graal from RC. Era's was a big chatroom, Delteria's was a big chatroom in 2002, Valikorlia's is a disturbing chatroom, etc. The point is that if work is getting done, this should be ok.

KuJi 10-27-2006 01:16 PM

GX's chat is dead.. 24/7. Even when 5 of us are working and are on RC / player.

No one besides Me, and Sage have hiring rights to GX. A couple others have change rights to fix my IP ( Contiga, and a couple others.. normally Ibonic will fix it though )

Sage only gets on during weekends =(

kinetaro 11-09-2006 01:01 AM

From my experiance, RC is at times a chatroom, but usually is for uploading, and general maintenance, depending on the server, era for example, if all admins where given RC "faq's, and events team" there would be 45 idiots begging the developers for new powers and special levels/ scripts/ gfx/ whatever for their personal use. any general discussion can take place outside of graal, or if you are speaking of low admins needing to alert high admins and the high admins not paying attention to player or PM you could try to tear apart the clientrc and make it so low admins can read the chat and send messages like a trial can PM they can only send one message every 60 seconds or so.

lancelot9 11-09-2006 03:52 AM

Ha..
how are staff supposed to get along without talking to eachother.. and doing it on RC is the easiest way...

RC is the quickest and best way to talk to staff and think up ideas..

I think the RC should be used as w/e the person with the rights wants it to.. if they dont wanna talk they dont have to.

Shotoo2 11-09-2006 06:30 AM

Events Team members and FAQs definitely don't need RC.

So why do you have an RC on Era? Events Team person?

zell12 11-09-2006 06:41 AM

RC should be for everyone. Not ET, "mabey" not even FAQs, that ones kind of touchy. But staff need incentive to develop, and this is a great way to give them it.

Making a staff system for them to actually talk in to RC and recieve text from it, but not actually have it. [for Era]

Doesn't matter, they need to be in staff= and a secure ip is needed. you would have to make an npc kick them off RC everytime they attempt to login.. so yeah. I already made that in my IRC chat program though (staff chat)
