A midi is a music file. They are quite small in file size because they only contain the list of instruments and what tones they play.

Musical Instrument Digital Interface, or MIDI, is an industry-standard electronic communications protocol that defines each musical note or event in an electronic musical instrument or show device such as a synthesizer, precisely and concisely, allowing electronic musical instruments, computers and other show equipment to exchange data in real time. MIDI does not transmit audio—it simply transmits real time digital data providing information such as the type and intensity of the musical notes and technical cues played during a performance.

So then its just in the instrumental of a song or whatever?

Its a protocol that allows to interpret instrumental sounds of any kind on your computer. If you have a elecrtonic key board you can produce sounds and songs and upload it as mimd file into your PC.

A MIDI file is not an audio file as such; it is simply a file containing instructions for the computer to generate music with. For example, it might contain an instruction saying to play a note C on octave 3 using a piano sample, and then a A on octave 4 using the same piano sample.

The computer then goes through each instruction and constructs the audio on-the-fly. The same protocol is used for connecting keyboards to computers and other audio devices; since you are only transmitting the instructions instead of the actual sounds, it makes it possible to synthesize new sounds, and it also means you are transferring only a very small amount of data.

It is really important to remember that a MIDI file will not sound the same everywhere. It'll sound different on a PC than a Mac, it'll sound different on a MIDI-capable mobile phone, hell, it will even sound different between different synthesizers on the same platform.

Imagine sheet music - it's just telling you what notes and how they are played, and needs a musician to make it into actual sound. This is how MIDI is, where the MIDI file is the sheet music, and the computer/software is the instrument, turning the notes from the file into the sound you hear.

Just as the musician can play the song using different instruments, MIDI can do this too, which is why MIDI files sometimes sound different when played on different computers (though because of General MIDI, they at least sound similar).

oh sorry XP Just about 30 mins for the whole thing, I'm in band so I have made up rythms that have stuck with me. Plus I know to read music in such.

Wow. It has been a LONG time since I've made MIDIs. Probably a good 2 or 3 years. I'm a lot better since I made these ;) but check them out.

If you choose to import and mess around with these midis, it's all right. You can learn from some of the techniques I used etc. Just don't copy/rip off of tracks and call it your own work >_<

I don't think you can justly say it wasn't influenced by anything. Maybe not so direct and blatant as thinking "This music is cool I want to make something like it" but you can't deny being influenced
