There is a post in the graphics area that Infernix made about some old trees he found. Look through that, Elk copied the technique of the trees and posted a stage by stage.

I think that would be really useful to take a look at.

I thought it was fairly easy to understand.

Firs the outline, then the main color, then the highlights based on the outline.

Right, but you also already know what you're doing.

Tutorials are usually meant for beginners to pick up skills that they don't yet have. For someone that hasn't done a lot of highlights or thought about light sources and how everything plays out, there's no explanation of how he went from flat color to the third image.
