new rc search function
 

I know you can search for files in the rc with
/find file.png or .nw or .* etc.

but how about searching for npc text within the .nw level files that are on your server.

For example:

/findnpctext addweapon

would return a list of all the levels and their locations
where, in that level, addweapon is in an npc, within the .nw file.
basically treat the .nw levels as plain text files and do a search on all of them.
would make finding and cataloging those levels where quests and weapons are added easier, especially as a server grows in size.

Yeah, someone mentioned it to me before, it's a great idea.

yep ... i could throw one together in perl in about 10 minutes and host it on my website, but then uploading every level to my website would be a pain ... so its not that hard to do ... and it would help a lot in the development and troubleshooting

To do this before, when Unholy Nation was having problems, I think Projectshifter just downloaded all of the NPCWs and did a grep on them xD

This would be a nice feature to have, though.
But make it so that you can specify the directory, and whether if it's recursive or not.

sounds very similar to what i did when i worked for a newspaper website for an archive text search.

so .. build it into rc already .. please?

Yes but might lag if you do something like

/fincnpctext function

text searching on a linux server with commands like grep, even over 100 megs of data (which even graal levels and npc should never amount to even on a large server) only takes a couple of seconds at most. so lag would not be that big of ,an issue, and this would mainly be used for troubleshooting anyways.

Flood the rc chat?

It will be visible only to the client who searches it anyways.

and it could be intergrated with my old idea
for having a separate rc tab to direct npc server related featured to.
(i mentioned this some months ago, to leave the rc chat open for chat, and search-npc feedback into another window for those who know what they are doing)
