Tiles Drawn Above the Player

I think it'd be rather useful to have the availability of nonblocking tiles that are drawn above the player, instead of underneath. This would have many useful purposes such as tree leaves, doorways, etc. It would eliminate many NPC's that are used to do this.

Comments/opinions?

The idea of layered levels is older than yo' mamma.

The NW project had something like this. I never liked it much because it was confusin due to the use of the Y axis to pretend we have a Z axis. Like, you have a tree with leaves that are drawn over the player, then you cannot place any other tile behind the leaves, so they are going to be all grass.

Using NPCs for the additional layer is more useful :\

Better idea -> You know RPG Maker? There are 3 layers, on every layer you can put tiles anywhere on the level, also on other tiles on other layers :D

I think you have have basically however many layers you want. Unfortunately the support for this isn't completely there yet :(

but, you can make tiles translucent :D

What if I want four layers, Murloc boy?

There is support for more tile layers in v4, it still needs some serverside code and better draw-ordering.

different layers of tiles is most useful if the tiles on the higher layers can have transparency. Yet still, it can also be useful for layers of tiles that are square shaped.

I think it would probably be better to have a clientside drawing layer map for tiles. Like green for under players, blue for default layer, red for drawing over players, and white for drawing as a light?

Ex. The tree. You could color the draw layer map red for the treetop and green for the trunk and grassy area around it. You could make mailboxes blue and the grass around them green. The tops of door entrances you could draw blue, etc.
