GS Certifiication : we should have a test

Becasue of this, and the solution most folks building playerworlds likely go to is this:

How does a playerworld renter (a paying customer) know that the scripter they hire is up to the task of making good scripts for the playerworld?

I say that to improve each paying customer's experience of making a graal playerworld, we should have a test, compiled by the scripting experts here, (and accordong to the poll I conducted there are at least 15 people, 4 who claim to be masters and 11 who say they can make anything work, poll is here http://forums.graalonline.com/forums...ad.php?t=62564 )
and this test which covers the essential skills needed in most common playerworld scripts can be reviewed and graded by graal/cyberjourers staff.

There can be a special page here or on graal.net or something that has the official list of the GS Certified scripters. Since GS2 is so new to most of us, the test can offer to accept answers in original gscript, or in gs2. More points for answering in gs2, such as another + making it a GS++ Certification.
Levels of script ability would increasingly be called
GS Certified
GS+ Certified
GS++ Certified

Categories covered I think could be:
triggeractions : within a weapon npc, and another npc that recieves the action serverside and affects a player attribute
showimg : to create a stat bar or display text on the screen on the client based on a server-wide message, and an npc that staff may use to change the server-wide message
baddy-npc : that chases the player, deals out damage serverside to the player, accepts damage from the player, dies, and eventually respawns.
private door : a door to a playerhouse that the owner of the house may use a command to "lock" it, or allow players with specific account names to be on the entrance list.
tailor : an npc that changes the player's appearance.
sparring and nopk zones : show that you can make these npcs, however simple they are, you need to know these basics, as well as areas of a level where weapons are disabled in general and then enabled within a box.

plus others ... that's just off the top of my head what a pw should have at the very least

What do y'all think of the idea?

Usually the management of a playerworld doesn't just blindly accept a 'I are good script0r, lolol', and requires the person they are hiring to send them example scripts.

I don't think there would be a test suitable for determining the qualifications of the person. Programming does not require 'book-smarts', each person is good at something different. Some people might be amazing at scripting GUI-related scripts, while another person accels at the math behind complex algorithms.

You honestly believe the people who claimed to be 'masters' weren't just trying to make themselves feel special? A self-evaluation on a subject usually yields quite suprising results in-favour of the person doing the evaluation.

I really don't think the Linux Cyberjouers staff have the time to make a test that each manager of a server should make theirselves.

The problem with this is, some of these concepts don't apply to certain servers, which is why it is better for the management to make their own test, that would test on things related to the server they are working for.

I think it should be up to the management to issue the tests, and decide if the person in question is applicable for the job. The A+ test that you are mimicing in this, is a hardware specification test, and has nothing to do with the programming aspect. The materials issued in that test are things that don't change, and are common to all computer systems.

I fail to see the real use.

Lance 12-06-2005 07:09 PM

What would stop people from cheating on this test? :\

Fry 12-06-2005 08:41 PM

I kinda have to agree with Skyld here (yes, it happens :frown:), as Okiesmokie said, it's something every playerworld manager should do himself (there are no females on the Internet), but of course doesn't do if they aren't really interested in the success of their project/are too unqualified to manage a playerworld (but they still bring in money, so huh).

The only real problem actually is on the board, everyone just says what he thinks is right, no matter how wrong, but that can be solved by acquiring a few more monkeys moderators (which do of course get chosen on the qualities of their posts).

how quickly we expect the worst in people.
but you are likely right.

sorry for wasting peoples time with an idea I hoped could help customer service.
But then I should not have expected a popular response, becasuse of this statement:

therefore the people (we) who post in these forums, do not work for playerworld managers/renters. And if people on these forums do not work for playerworlds, then why should any of you who post here be concerned with the difficulty of finding a talented scripter?

pointless

Yen 12-07-2005 01:58 AM

Yeah, if there was something like this, people would cheat.

>_> That's how I've been hired, every time..
Except UN, where their NAT Admin almost begged me to work there.. But then the manager decided my scripting wasn't good enough.. And at the same time, the NAT Admin was crashing the NPC-Server with a script that made my eyes bleed.

That is not true. Several of us here work for servers. I don't see the point of this, as Okiesmokies said, normally playerworld admins have tests for hiring scripters.

What does that say about the servers that hired you, then?

And, who was the NAT Admin on UN that was 'begging' you to work there? It surely wasn't during the time I was the NAT Admin on UN.

D: I hold grudges for a long time.
I dunno, it's something like.. Avalon?
