Linux Wine: GRAALEDITOR.EXE
1 Attachment(s)
Well after playing with dlls, wine regedit, and wine config. I finally got it working it actully works quite nicely sometimes you'll get an error scrolling on the level but everything else is really just minor like you can't see the selected tab's except the main tiles one.
Update: to use the GraalEditor.exe, you will need a working installation of the Windows Graal, download the editor from the serverlist screen (Start -> Install Packages), and then use wine to start GraalEditor.exe. We might also make the editor downloadable directly to the Linux Graal installation (~/.graal/graal4) in the future. |
Nice work! And Diablo II: LoD rocks :D
Seeya in 8 hours :frown: |
Can you edit NPCs? I only see "Select Tile" in your screenshot.
Also, what bugs have you come accross while using this? and re: classics having 1 post every 8 hours, that is the same as like 1-2 posts a day, you probarbly wont be awake to use the third one. |

Stickied until the official Linux level editor is released.

always wanted to get linux but I know if I partion my hdd, windows will just go over the limit and leave no space for linux :P
|
When I get my own computer, I will have both linux and windows on it (if you do this, make sure to put windows in first, then linux, as windows will delete other files....ah the monopolistic views of Microsoft).
Anyone else use this setup? |

You can easily rewrite the boot record to allow booting linux. |
I always have my computer boot Linux and Windows. I've installed it both ways without it "deleting other files". You just need to know what you're doing and install it on the right partition.

Personally, it's a lot more work to put linux on your computer x_X Still going to do it, but only after a lot of research, and very carefully XD |

If you're using the LILO bootloader, then you should just be able to rewrite it using the 'lilo' command. |
Fav Distributions of Linux?
|
The link is dead.

Also, last time I checked, you dont have to do any of the stuff mentioned in the newer versions of wine. Just install wine, then install Graal > GraalEditor on wine, and just run it. As easy as that. |
if you're going to use linux then dont you most likely have windows installed too? who DOESNT have windows now adays? http://graalonline.biz/images/smilies/pluffy.gif

I have updated the original post. For me there are far too many problems though, will need to finish the online level editor sometime soon.
|
Stefan, its nice that you care, but it would be better to keep such things out of the Graal client I think. I just dont like using the Graal client to do everything :/

I do not see the problem with the online tools. :|
It makes the entire process of updating levels easier (as opposed to having to download/upload your level each time), and it is much more productive in terms of supporting all three platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux) at the same time. It also saves you having to download external editors or programs, and means that updates to the online editor are much easier to distribute and they would be come effective every time you log on. |

Of course it helps the Linux and Mac users, but there should still be an extra executable for Windows.
|
Well it depends on how it is done I guess. If you have the same functionality and you have tools for generating new maps (specify map size, automatically generate and update the server options) then it could be much easier to use. In Graal3D there is an online editor and something like that would be fun for Graal2D too, it's much more fun to update things in real-time rather than starting another application and needing to download or upload or configure things again.

Basically, they'd stop recommending and supporting it, but I'm sure you could still old-fashion update levels via uploading them after making offline |
The thing is that an online editor would probably easier to do than improving the old external editor. Also most stuff required for an online editor is already in the engine, even functions for generating maps (M)

Offline stuff is way cooler. You dont have to be online to make something, and you will probably need rights on some server to use the online editor.
|
Well the levels are for online servers, so at the end you need to be online anyway. And you could work together on the levels.

If we do that, and at some time want to upload the levels somewhere, will it cause errors? I am making a whole world, and would hate to decide to use it, and not be able to without putting a lot of work into it to make it compatible to the new engine. <edit> aww shoot, I just noticed this thread was for Linux x.x...my post was meant for any operation system. |
The levels will of course still work, Graal still supports levels made in May 1998 :D
|
I don't know, doing things offline always had the benefit of being quicker and easier, responsive and such.
Of course there are benefits to having online editors, but it depends on if you personally prefer one thing over the other. I certainly don't want to see the offline editor fade into nothingness, I'd love to see it actually updated with new features such as layers and such. And I don't know if it's possible, but if there were to be an updated one for newer GS2, at least scrap the GS1 in it and have a syntax tester for GS2. I don't know if that's possible without actually implementing GS2 in it. If not, then just scrap GS1 syntax tester(maybe include pretty print) and leave the formatting button. |

what, no Mac question? Bigots...

Good job on that pac :D
|
Progress of online level editor:
- select and paste tiles - select a rectangle on the ground and copy or move it - select tile objects (bush etc.) and paste it - draw paths There is still some work to do though, like an npc adder/editor and support for tile layers. Also there need to be a way to add new levels and generate gmaps. |
