Whale Oil for Lamps?
I just thought of this yesterday while pondering the whole 'harpoon another ship idea' after a fishy bit me south of Hotaru.
Why not add whales as monsters, in dark blue water, and add harpoons, and when you kill the whale you gain so much 'whale oil'. You then take the whale oil and put it in your lamps and whatnot to make them light. Your torches in turn would have something like 'Whale Oil 50%'. When the Whale Oil in the torch reaches zero, you can't light the torch/lamp/etc until you refill it with whale oil. You might also could use the 'whale meat' for food.. and plus, this gives us a chance for a bunch of GK Hippies to come out of the shadows and protest... this also brings about Kingdom competition for whale oil, which would lead to (finally) more naval wars simply for Whaling rights. Whale bones could be used for brushes or certain types of furniture, and maybe some types of jewelry or something. Either way.... would be nice :) |
I find it a good idea maybe they could make a few new items you could obtain with killing whales or something.
But I wouldn't call them whales, give them some name that is a bit more original. |
|
I don't see how it'd work with the GK levels, but it'd be cool.
|
We were going to do that on Archaic, I was going to make fishing on the sea a lot like moby D1ck (At the time, I had just finished reading it, and I was like, "WOA THAT'S COOL").
|
Hooray for classic american literature.

*Edit i liked the idea so much, i made a sketch of a whale, lemme no what you guys think:D (made the whale about the size of a boat, cause i think they should be pretty big^^) |
I looves it.
To those who asked how it can be incorporated into the system, it could run much as thihngs do with the fish. But instead of hooking it with a fishing pole and dragging it to shore, you would throw harpoons at it and drag it out of the water. Of course ,there should ALWAYS be the possibility of said boat losing percentage from the whale thrashing. |
:O k then i'll start working on different angles, and different sprites for it's movement:)

Er... ok... I amgonna try to translate this...
'This idea is good, but there are so many things that need to be done before it, I think you might need to be patient until they can get around to it' ? |

Dude, I am really diggin' the line style. Seriously. You will need to make animation frames for 'em, but they could work similarly to the way fish do. I took the libery of detailing a lil' bit. See if you like it. GK really has no aquatic enemies, and this would make for an awesome change. The idea of a lord-sized water enemy just kicks a whole lot of arse.
Also, I went back after uploading and tried fixing the transparencies. Can someone test this? |
ya, animation shops tranparencies don't work with graal :( so i always have to leave a background :( but i like the way you did that :) and i made the whale a little smaller than a boat ^^ but lemme get started on those GFx;)
|
Hahah. Found out that the transparencies weren't correct. If I can get that working, It'll be fine.

hmm...lemme no what you think...not to sure how a whale swims :whatever: so i just made it's tail move :\
|
Way too jerkey
|
it'd look smoother in a gani, when it's finished, i'd have to pull everything apart...(head,body,tail, etc.)
|
I don't think it's all that jerky. Actually looks rather fluid to me. Only when the tail switches directions does it look jerky. And if you need to know movements for animations, the best thing to do is study the genuine article.
http://www.oceanfootage.com/oceans/v...show_clipbin=1 Also, don't segment it. That would probably cause more harm than good. Slow the animation down, and notice how the tail of an orca tends to flail a little rather than staying stiff all the time. I am seriously amazed by this effort, though. Keep at it, man! |
Again GK is blindfolded by another side distraction. We should be working on fixing the current problems before we keep adding on and creating more broken things.

thank,s gtg to school, i'll work on them later(when i get home)^^
|
Make sure you use the video I posted as a reference. The movements start from the front and move in waves all the way to the back.
|
that link won't open for me :\ i'll try finding somethin else...

uh sry for the double post, but i made it more smoother?
|
dont quote me if im wrong, but think of a whale as a worm inching.
its head moves, and then the entire body moves in domino effect to the tail |
Its body moves in ripples, not like an inchworm's. I get what you mean, though.
|
Whales don't have necks.
|
Nor fingers, for that matter.

I like this whole whale idea, just the gfx needs to be much smoother and such.
Don't forget that the whale will be underwater, you need to hand-make those colors, I think. |

They don't have red eyes either but meh.
|
That's why I tried to make them look more natural in my edit of 'em.
|
You should try to have the head go up while the tail goes down and vice versa. That'll make it a little more lifelike. Just make sure to rotate the middle a little to make it look nice XD

Well you get what I mean, it only has the tail moving right now and it looks weird lol
|
The head up / tail down thing and vice-versa will still make it look wierd. I need to find an example of the wavelike movements I'm talking about...
