Please tell me what you think

I wanted to let everyone know I am making a server. I have recently finished working out all the intricate details and have set them in stone (within my mind). Now I face a small issue. I cannot decide on my own. My own decision is rather solid and will require a great deal of work. I am making this for people to enjoy however, and if this detail makes no real difference I will take the easy way out simply for the sake of completing this project.

Here is the issue. This game I will be creating...well, it is like no other game ever seen. I won't release the details, aside from it is a side scroller and there will be hundreds of various characters. Hundreds. And there lies the problem. I can either make hundreds of character sprites, or use default Graal characters and using a few tricks to make them appear unique.

That is where you guys come in. I want to know: do new character sprites make that much of a difference? I am already set on making new backgrounds (and after I settle this character issue will be releasing a brief video showing the graphics and some other little things), and every other graphic will be unique, so no worries there. I am very fast and skilled with scenary, but characters are much more difficult. I can get it done, I only fear motivation will be lost by the time I do. So tell me - would you refuse to play a world because of lack of new characters? Or would you be willing to play it? Do you believe new players (people who are just looking at a website and perhaps see a screenshot of the game) would be turned off by seeing the graal characters? I don't know: I am one and cannot speak for the majority. So share your opinions. Or if you're lazy simply vote on on the poll.

**Side Note: If you're a scripting looking for something different, PM me. I am a scripter myself though few have seen my work, and I rank myself > the GST (do they even exist anymore?). If you are interested, I just hope you're damn good. Honestly I intend to do everything myself, just would be nice to have a little help. My "little help" would need to be someone around the level of Kaimetsu...so don't message me unless you believe you've got that. (Although I am a arrogant fool and would argue I am better then Kaimetsu, simply because I make NPCs people can actually use =P...though that arguement is shot down by the fact that few have seen my work). Anywho, yeah...not very hopeful on this side note, but it is worth a shot.

Is it fun? Is it easy to start? Is it intuitive? Is the interface nice, clean, and accessible either through hotkeys or easy to click buttons? Is it innovative?

Graphics don't matter, if all these can be fufilled with the graphics withstanding.

a sidescroller definately wouldn't be very fun for graal in my opinion, i mean just imagine any sidescroller multiplayer... not fun, boring 2d linear levels.

The Graal system, like early PS2 system specifications, has untapped potential. If someone would invest the time and energy to create and optimize code, you could have a VERY nice game.

Im not understanding how removing a dimension from graal will make it even better Amagius.

What dimension? The only "dimension" is the limitation you are superimposing on it that it can only be used as a "action RPG "Zelda-esque" game."

You'd argue and fail. From what I've seen, Kaimetsu is very intelligent, and you must be very foolish to believe you're better then him.

I doubt you are greater then the entire team.

If few have actually seen your work don't make random claims of you being better then any other person.

Delusions of grandeur would sum up most of this guy's post.

Actually, there is an immensely popular mmorpg out there that is a 2d side-scroller..

What is important is that there is something to do that makes your server unqiue. Personally I believe all the "RP" servers, and most servers that shift away from a normal "PK and Spar" server, is that they are lacking in any form of PVM (Player versus Monster) system.

If you're going to turn away from tradition, don't halfass it, or it will turn into a waste of time.

It is not removing a dimension. It is shifting a dimension into another. But not really. It is really just a different perspective on a 2d game.

Ah well, don't think nothing has changed in the years. Education in math has brought me far closer to your level then you might imagine =).

As far as that other post, I won't even reply. Obviously any reputation I once has on Graal has been lost. But that is fine. I've got the confirmation I needed from this thread for what I should do. Now I will get my delusional self and begin creating something grand. Thanks for the help =).

Not everything requires a meaning. :\ Quality over quantity, and that's something I've learned with art. My sketchbook can be filled with drawings and paintings, but it's worthless if it's all garbage and doesn't have any thought. Meh. I'm not impressed.

You seem to be guilty of the very assumption you attribute to me. How do you know that I haven't improved? For that matter, when have you had sufficient opportunity to determine my limitations?

Well, it matters because claiming to be a better scripter is an assertion about skill levels. Skill exists whether it's employed or not. Not to mention that 'useable' scripts are not inherently more difficult.

Let's say Joe Newbie identifies a type of scripting that nobody else has covered (perhaps because it has no applicability, perhaps because it isn't any fun). He writes a few scripts within this subset of the whole, and then claims that he is the best scripter on Graal. Is it a justifiable claim?

I guess I should say something about the main topic. Personally I wouldn't be discouraged from playing just because you use the default bodies, but I think there are others that might be. Still, that's just a first-impression thing. If their friends are all enthusing about the server, they're likely to give it a second look.

I don't see how that would help you outside of a few kinds of scripts.
