A problem on the forums to think about

There have been alot of complaints stemming from the different thread views that we now have the option of choosing.
Please keep in mind that the views will NOT be the same for you as it is for others using a different view.

The reason for this thread is to ask that the community of these forums please, when posting to a thread, please quote the person that you are speaking to unless it is just a general post.

This will help members using every view to be able to follow the thread much easier :)

Thanks alot ^^

All thanks to me :D

Fixed.

It is not necessary for a person to make seperate posts to quote people, it is just fine to have multiple quotes in one post (as I am going to do in this post)...no need to have a long line of posts back to back just to quote different people...I said what I meant to say, my post does not need to be corrected.

Not really, that way it can still be confusing for hybrid and threaded users who are the majority.

xAndrewx 09-28-2004 08:53 PM

I'd quote but it's pointless.. It's time consumin'

This isn't a chatroom, you have plenty of time to write decent posts.

I'd rather see a script to append proximal messages from one user when in normal view. That way the people using the tree-structure can follow the structure and the others don't see multiple posts. Of course, that's a bit much to ask.

You're missing the point, when you combine multiple quotes into one post (when the quotes are from different sub-topics) you break the tree structure. What Loriel posted makes more sense.

It is true that I dont know anything about the tree structure view, what I do know is that those who are using it, and even those who aren't NEED to quote who they are referring to in their post, if they are replying to a person...I think this is the bigger problem

Those of us not using the "tree structure" view are not required to post so that it does not break the tree structure when we are not using it

falco10291029 09-28-2004 11:41 PM

Wait how do you change views? I like my current one but am curious.

Scott 09-28-2004 11:59 PM

This was pointless. Awesome.

I dont think it is pointless when it seems to bother so many people on the forums

Dont make up quotes that a person didnt say, I did not post that...actually I see that you only took part of the post of what I said, which makes it look like I said something else which is VERY irritating

But, you do have a point, I will try to put the names of the people I am quoting within the quote

Scott 09-29-2004 12:17 AM

Haha, hypocrit.

Even though you yourself did it in this thread?

No, it wasn't. If people do follow it then people using Hybrid and what not with the tree will quote too so that it's okay for the majority in linear default to see where the posts are coming from.

I did quote, however I didn't put the names in...I went back and put names in and will do that from now on, but I did at least put a quote, you did not :\

It is kinda hard to reply to a post that hasn't been posted yet, I mean how can I quote someone who hasn't posted? The majority of the forums use the linear view...

You guys are making a bigger deal of this then it has to be, just quote the person that you are replying to and it will make things easier...it isnt that hard.

Ok, let me ask a question, I think Loriel said something about this in another thread one time...
Does it make a difference if, instead of going directly to the quick reply box at the bottom, you hit the quick reply link directly on the post you are replying to?

xAndrewx 09-29-2004 03:04 PM

Eh? this isn't a school..

Can't we just do

@Moonie :

?

It probably would, but I usually use quote anyway

That isn't exactly what I meant...I always quote (I just wasn't putting the names in which I will from now on), but I meant as in not breaking the tree structure that some use.

Then why are you making requests of them, and then ignoring their input?

falco10291029 09-29-2004 09:17 PM

Personnaly, I don't see the point of the non-linear modes, they just organize beyond need.

If you do not specify a post, it will reply to the main topic instead of a particular post.

It really isn't that hard to have good posting etiquette :\

It's nice, but only when everyone is using it.

I just think that the bigger problem is the double-postedness of threaded posts veiwed in linear mode. Granted there is no simple solution to that. Actually it really wouldn't be that bad if it wasn't so easy for me to forget about threaded view...

zell12 09-29-2004 10:27 PM

Hey Darlene, I can break down your quote how I like. In no way am I changing what you say. <3

I am curious, is this a rule or something. Are we supposed to make quotes when we reply to someone, because that is retarded how much controlling this is.

No, it is not a rule, it is something that I wanted to discuss with members as it seems to be a problem.

The biggest problem is not the multiple posting, it is the not quoting who you are talking to in my opinion, and it is what I have seen many complaints on.

So, if I use the quick link directly on the post, it should help that, correct?

I request that people quote who they are speaking to so it isn't so confusing, is that so much to ask? I am also not ignoring input, that is the whole point of this thread, to discuss it.

Loriel 09-29-2004 11:25 PM

And those of us who use the ```tree structure' ' ' are not required to post so it fits your preferences.

Also, those of us know what post I am referring to.

You know what Loriel, I am trying to take care of something that people have been complaining about for awhile now, I dont think it would kill people to put a quote in their post. You fight me on every single thing I try to do on these forums.

Ok, listen folks...I made the thread, do as you will
