Creating a Server!

Hello everyone! I am Gareth, some know me from Era.
And some know me....just because they do.
I have been looking into creating a server, in which everyone could enjoy themselves and play in a highly interactive environment.
The server im making is called Sehkai which is the japanese word for world.
I plan on making sehkai a city type world, With thugs...Executives and even Police. This is going to be a roleplay type server.
In example, Lets say someone goes and pks someone...they will begin to get a wanted level and eventually police will come after them.
Im looking for gfxers,scripters....and anybody that can help.
if your interested in helping, Message me on aim.
Thanks for your time!
-Gareth

*points to playerworld section*

A short, very very vauge description of your server isn't going to get many people excited... I'm sorry. You'll have to start development on your own and get some example content to show off, present a new, innovative idea... Something worthwhile.

No it isn't.

GarethOmni 06-30-2004 09:14 PM

It is. -.-
It may not be in the japanese dictionary that you have. but its in mine, so back off.
Jesus, some of you people are worse than those on the era forums.

matt8891 06-30-2004 09:27 PM

Ehhh...I suggest you get some idea's from GTA Vice City and Driv3r.

If your going to do this your going to need a hell of alot of LAT's and especially NAT's...Or just good ones.

Dude, if he got ideas from vice city it would be just like Era. Driver? Never played it.

WanDaMan 06-30-2004 09:39 PM

Just carry on playing Era, Save your self the trouble of paying for a playerworld..
Modern servers - suck (apart from Era).

Kai owned him.

Crono 06-30-2004 09:43 PM

Era sucks too wan, what the hell are you talking about. Bravo had lots of potential but the manager was immature.

2) Translation isn't an injective process. The Japanese language doesn't perfectly map onto ours. The words 'world' and 'sekai' are not identical - each has subtle flavors that aren't reflected in simple dictionaries.

Translation should be left to those with at least some knowledge of both languages. You can't expect a webpage or a book to replace that knowledge.

WanDaMan 06-30-2004 11:29 PM

Kai, how did you learn to speak Japanese?
A book? (I might try and pick some language up)

No joke either.

Nicely said. I believe the world he wants is Shikai, which sort of means 'The Seven Seas', although my japanese is exteremely limited so I imagine i've got my definition wrong here.

Crono 06-30-2004 11:59 PM

I dont like japanese. Anime nerds take it then yell japanese things and read manga all day OHOEONS KONICHIWADAFALG!!1 ^_____________________________________^

First of all, as previously stated, THE PLAYERWORLD FORUM. Second of all, before you post anything you should of had at least 1 screenshot, cmon. Third, what Kai said. Also if your going to make a Japanese server dont put modern in it, make it ancient japan before it was western influenced.

BTW For the record Kai is right. I aimed a link to this thread to a Japanese friend of mine (Who is from Japan)

Bravo could not survive with over a few people with level 4 RC and all carrying on their own ideas.

What's wrong with have a modern-Japan based server? Who are you to put his ideas down? If he is able to employ original ideas, I think that's good. I've always been interested in the Yakuza, and that whole 'Triad' thing myself. Although I'm not a fan of modern servers either, you're telling him not to make a modern server... which is hypocritical. :\

Well, I'm by no means fluent yet. I'm working my way through Pimsleur's audio course, along with this book. The latter is quite inappropriately titled, but useful nonetheless.

davidpsy 07-01-2004 09:53 AM

Jese guys.. You could of been a little more friendly to him..

WanDaMan 07-01-2004 10:33 AM

Ah thanks, I might purchase, still got a bit of money left :)
Thanks

GarethOmni 07-01-2004 07:22 PM

I dont freaking care how inaccurate im being...Im trying to be creative,I know or...pretty,much know what a good server needs. It seems to me a good server needs to be interactive...in more than one way so the players can always find something to do. Server needs a good manager, one who is not only nice but is strict when it comes to rules. Server needs good structure and maybe a storyline so as to not be so chaotic.

XJOKERX 07-01-2004 07:24 PM

I know but just because you know that doesn't mean you can execute it, a lot of people know that but they can't get it right. Best of luck.
But seriously modern chinese would be sorta lame...

GarethOmni 07-01-2004 07:30 PM

Yeah, Well im going to do my best.
And if it doesnt work...ill know i alteast did my best.
That will be enough for me. and WanDaMan, Those guys arent half as bad as some pricks ive ran into on era.

You don't think that pointing out a person's mistakes is a good way to help them fix those mistakes? And do you honestly believe that you can get away with labelling anybody's comments as 'drivel', without even backing it up?

A huge deal, now? A small aspect? Wrong on both counts. I was hardly making "a huge deal" about it with my first post - I simply informed him that his title was incorrect. When he disagreed, I explained my reasoning. I don't think this constitutes an overreaction.

And as for it being a "small aspect": Do you think Everquest would have sold so many copies if it were named 'Everqeust'? The title of the playerworld is representative of the entire gameworld, and often the first thing that potential players see. It's hardly a place where you want errors.

You are the one demeaning our would-be manager, by implying that he needs your protection against a tiny, innocuous correction. I'm willing to wager that he doesn't need a new mother, Donald. Stop trying to fill the role.

Pointing out someone’s spelling is really low, but it is expected being the arrogant jerk you so happen to be. I shall use spell check from now on...

It was my opinion, so yes I believe I can "get away" with stating my opinion (as long as it is within the confines of the rules) without backing it up, Kaimetsu.

Yes but it was the way you said it that made it seem like he was inferior.

Yeah well maybe you wouldn’t of bought Everquest if it was spelled Everqeust but most people probably wouldn’t care about the name, once they see the screen shots and hear about the content they would want to play it and they would buy it.

Lets take the card game Yu Gi Ho for example. Lots of kids play it, they probably don’t know what the word "Yu Gi Ho" even means but they still buy the cards and play the game..

A tiny innocuous correction, Kaimetsu? Well last I knew you had just implied that the "tiny innocuous correction" was actually very important.

And as for the mother stuff, I'm not even going to respond to that...

Can you actually point out any examples of arrogance in the messages I sent to him, or are you just relying on baseless insults here?

Quote:

Oh, don't misinterpret. I wasn't implying that you would face any trouble from our wonderful moderators or any such thing. Rather that, simply, everybody would laugh at you. Opinions are fine, but when they're based on petulant rage instead of logic, people tend to assign them less value.

Quote:

Haha, could you get any more vague? If you're going to make accusations like this, you should at least be prepared to back them up

Then evidently you have no understanding of the gaming public. Virtually nobody buys MMORPGs for pretty screenshots. They care about the reputation, the image. And what kind of image does a misspelled title present? One of unprofessionalism and lack of attention to detail.

Quote:

Indeed they do. However, this does not support your point in any way, because you cannot show that, if there were an error in the title, the sales would be just as high. I'll grant that misspellations of Japanese words aren't as bad, since few amongst the target audience speak the language, but it's still a negative factor that simply doesn't have to exist. How long does it take to change the name of a playerworld that probably hasn't even started yet?

Quote:

A tiny innocuous correction, Kaimetsu? Well last I knew you had just implied that the "tiny innocuous correction" was actually very important.
And last I knew, the words 'tiny' and 'unimportant' weren't actually equivalent. For example, a tiny change to a script can make a big difference, no?

And as for the word 'innocuous'... do you even know what it means?

Quote:

And as for the mother stuff, I'm not even going to respond to that...

You were the one who started this by being so arrogant towards the creator of this thread. Examples? Alright.

GarethOmni: The server im making is called Sehkai which is the Japanese word for world.
Kaimetsu: No it isn't.

Right from the start you just tell him he is wrong. You state a 3 word sentence with a capital N and a period at the end giving the illusion of a strong and defiant "no it is not!".

Everyone makes errors, some errors are large and some are quite small. You are obsessing on a small relatively inconsequential error. You also pointed out the error to him in a hostile and demeaning manner. This manner of relating to others often has the effect of creating conflict rather then meaningful discussion and positive effect. Perhaps you would do well to engage in some self reflection regarding your own petulant rage disguised as logic.

And that's arrogance? Informing him of a fact in a concise manner? What dictionary are you using?

Quote:

Oh, now it is arrogant to observe the rules of English? I capitalise every first word, you fool. I always use a '.' at the end. This isn't defiance, it's knowing how to type properly.

Quote:

Obsessing? I already covered this. I pointed out his error and then, when he failed to see it on his own, I described it for him. Nobody in his right mind would describe this as obsessive behaviour.

You also pointed out the error to him in a hostile and demeaning manner.
Yeah, you can tell by how I used an apostrophe in the "isn't". An apostrophe of defiance!

Only in those who are too insecure to accept their own mistakes. Their tantrums are meaningless to me.

Again and again you throw baseless insults. What, are you gonna insult my hairstyle next?

1) There was nothing illogical about my explanation on the nature of translation.
2) There is absolutely no indication that my posting herein is fueled by rage. I have been calm and methodical throughout, while you have childishly overreacted to a non-existent slight.

Yes, and elsewhere I've stated it explicitly. Is there something wrong with this - am I not entitled to my opinion?

If that's the case then he isn't fit to be a manager. That's neither my fault nor my problem, and it won't be changed by pretending his mistakes don't exist.

Quote:

Hardly. Note the context - I used the word 'tiny' along with the word 'innocuous', suggesting that the former's scope is related to the meaning of the latter. In other words, the capacity to insult was tiny. If you interpreted it differently then chalk it up to your lack of reading ability, because it's quite obvious that I wouldn't contradict myself in the manner that you describe.

The problem is not with your knowledge. The problem is your demeaning arrogant style of interacting with others. There is a long pattern of this sort of behavior by you that goes back a very long time. It has gotten very old. What makes its worse is that you, apparently, are totally blind to this major personality flaw that you possess in such great abundance.
