Stop the theif!

I was wondering, shouldn't the stealing skill work on battle mode players instead of just on monsters, it wouldn't have to be overpowered like when it worked on players in the old days, you should only be able to steal like, max 5 plat or something like that, and you shouldn't have to drag and drop the skill icon on the player becuase, most people will just see it then ;O

Satrek2000 03-06-2004 01:31 PM

You don't have to drag/drop the skill - if you hotkey it and press the key, it will apply the skill to line of sight, which works fine - same with singing and oratory. (It still amazes me how some players drag and drop spells like charisma on themselves instead of simply casting them with nobody in line of sight ;) ).

Also, stealing from players would be nice if it was restricted to plats, but a) should it be depending on the player's agility level, and b) it should be possible to get away with it without message - otherwise people will get chopped down for 5 plats...

Myomoto 03-06-2004 01:51 PM

Of course it shouldn't leave a message to the player getting pick pocket, but it should if you failed ;) also you would have to be in battle mode yourself ofcourse, and agillity level would just increase the chance for getting away with it.

What about stealing from shops? it could be like if you fail it would say in the message area that the shop owner yell for his gaurds and two high level gaurd monsters would appear and attack you? ;O

You should have to be on bmode to steal from bmoders too. If someone jacks my money I want to be able to jack their life.

Myomoto 03-06-2004 04:48 PM

Of course, that's kinda the hole point ;)

Kaiser2 03-06-2004 06:23 PM

Yes, that would be a good idea, but I have a few suggestions:

Agility level should affect what messages you get, like, if you're robbed by a guy with low agility, it'd say something like "So and so looks very shiftily" then as you level up, it'll start changing, so it'll say things like "You can't put your finger on it, but something about soandso doesn't seem right" Then maybe something like "Soandso smiles at you as they pass you by." And eventually, no message.

haunter 03-06-2004 10:42 PM

What good would that do? The person would STILL know you're trying to steal from them... Just change how long the message stays on the screen.

zell12 03-06-2004 10:47 PM

It shouldn't depend on agility now because the only fast way to get agility exp is by disarming runes, and doing that all day as a thief would be dumb, ya?

Kaiser2 03-07-2004 05:21 AM

I'm level 20 agility and I haven't disarmed a rune in my life. You were saying?

Myomoto 03-07-2004 11:49 AM

wtf, how?!?!

Monkeyboy_McGee 03-07-2004 05:01 PM

Oh yay, yet another reason that we can't go on Bmode. "Come to Bmode! Not only will you get spam-killed whenevr you enter bomboria, you'll also get everything you own stolen too! Great fun!"

Satrek2000 03-07-2004 05:47 PM

I'm afraid I'm in bmode and havn't been killed in months... and I'm not a dedicated fighter, I even prefer to run. You're doing something wrong ;)

Anyway, either there should be a message saying who it was, or none at all, any other message would give it away just the same...

Kaiser2 03-07-2004 07:58 PM

Eh, true...but I really have no other contributions to this thread. Let me change my suggestion:

If you do not have the (stealth) ability (like, from worshipping Aengus, or from wearing an RoT) then you will produce that message when you try to rob someone, but the duration would be affected by your agility level or something (along with chance of successfully robbing them.) If you fail, the other guy will get a message saying something like "You notice <namehere> trying to pickpocket you!"

If you DO have the (stealth) ability, you would never cause those messages to appear, but it would not alter your chances of successfully stealing. If you fail, THEN you produce those messages, like "Soandso looks very shiftily."

Now, if day/night effects would be added, then things would get a lot more interesting. At night, your chances of successfully robbing them would be greater, and even greater if you have (stealth) or darkvision cast on yourself. If you have both, the effect would not double, just count as if you have one of them. If you worship DianCecht, you have that large aura of light around you, so you shouldn't be very good at robbing people at night, since it's pretty hard to miss seeing a glowing person stealing your wallet at night.

If the other person has dark vision then it would be harder to rob him, since he can see as if it were daytime, so you lose all bonuses you would otherwise gain from robbing them at night. DianCecht worshippers would have extra protection from being robbed, since they would illuminate the thief rather well.

Here is a little chart I've developed to show the effects of these various things. Note that the number after the + really doesn't mean anything, just signifies an increase.

Daytime:
Nothing: No change to stealing rate. Messages when you try robbing him, and if you fail.
Stealth: +1 to successful steal. No messages to the other guy unless you fail.
Darkvision: No affect, neither to the thief or the victim.
Worshipping DianCecht: No affect, neither to the thief nor the victim.

Nighttime:
Nothing: +1 to stealing, since you are shrouded in darkness. No messages if you try or fail, unless the victim has darkvision, or worships DianCecht, since they can see as if it were daytime.
Stealth: +2 to stealing, +2 to protection from being robbed. (Overrides Darkvision's bonuses.) No messages if you try or fail, unless the victim has darkvision, or worships DianCecht, since they can see as if it were daytime.
Darkvision: +2 to stealing, +2 to protection from being robbed. (Overridden if you have Stealth.) No messages if you try or fail, unless the victim also has darkvision, or worships DianCecht, since they can see as if it were daytime.
Worshipping DianChecht: -5 to stealing, since you are very easily seen. Messages will appear, since you are clearly visible. +5 to protection from robbing since you can see the thieves easily.

If I have inconsistencies between my "chart" and my paragraps, tell me, since I wrote this in a rush. :X

You see the 5 plat limit is to protect you from getting all you own stolen...

And Kaiser, i like those ideas! now if only it was added... *pokes Stefan*

Kaiser2 03-07-2004 11:55 PM

I'll suggest it to him, just as soon as he gets around to granting my Debug. >_>
And if you like my ideas, vote for me. ;D
I appreciate you!

Satrek2000 03-08-2004 12:29 PM

*gets dizzy from all the ideas possible with night/day effects...*

Anyway, I like kaiser's ideas. Now we have to find out whether Stefan's still alive... :\

WanDaMan 03-08-2004 02:57 PM

I agree with this, aslong as you don't loose anything important like a ROW or ROS..

Satrek2000 03-08-2004 04:37 PM

The system should be restricted to money - no gems, no rings, no items of any other kind. Make the maximum 5 times the player's level (a bit more than what you drop when dieing) and make it increase with your level, and some probability, using luck, to go vrom 0 to max.

Myomoto 03-08-2004 04:41 PM

Also a time counter, so you can't just pick pocket the same person 2031319831 times in a row on like, 2 mins. ;O

Kaiser2 03-08-2004 05:57 PM

Yes, the player would be unrobbable for 1 hour after that, or after he slays 50 enemies (since he's no longer worried about being robbed, but worried about not dying.), whichever comes first.

Also, luck should be a factor, such as each luck+ giving a +1 bonus to stealing. Long live Aengus! (Even though he's a god and is immortal anyhow.)

Myomoto 03-08-2004 06:28 PM

Hmm... maybe a bit less than 1 hour ;O
But something like that...

Desolator12 03-09-2004 03:32 AM

I personally think that the (stealth) ability should just make it easier for you to get near a monster without it noticing you... i mean, you get onscreen a bit, and a wolf auto-sees you... yay?

BUT, with the stealth, it would knock that range down, say,25%?

GTXOO 03-09-2004 03:32 AM

You steal 5 plats, if your skill is high you have a high success rate of stealing// if its low u might get caught and if you do, it gives a message saying ATTEMPTED TO STEAL -------- blah, and you both go on pk mode for 2 mins.

Kaiser2 03-09-2004 03:45 AM

No, you should only be able to steal from other bmoders, if you're on bmode yourself. If you get something like that which puts you onto bmode, even for 2 minutes, that's enough time for a heavy duty PKer to pound on you and kill you 1-100 times, depending on whether he can find your respawn point or not. o_O

Myomoto 03-11-2004 01:29 PM

No offense but it would be kinda stupid that the one who get pick pocket to go oon Bmode, that way high level thieves would just beable to pick pocket newbies and kill them afterwards ;O

Kaiser2 03-12-2004 12:58 AM

Yes, that too. Poor newbies, it's hard enough as it is. Don't let p-moders be robable.
